Downtown Memphis is proud to be a part of national Bike-to-Work Day again this year on Friday, May 20!

Bicycles are ideally suited for getting around in Downtown Memphis' 6.5-square mile area, and Bike-to-Work Day is a chance for cyclists of all skill and experience levels to give bicycle commuting a try. This year’s event will have an added element of healthy competition, with trophies and bragging rights awarded to the three companies with the highest numbers of registered participants. Each company will be allowed to keep and display its trophy for one year and will have the opportunity to retain or improve its championship status on Bike-to-Work Day 2012.

Participation is easy: just have each person at your company register online. Each company will then verify its actual Bike-to-Work Day participation by posting a group photo to the Bike to Work Downtown Memphis Facebook page by 10:00 a.m. on May 20. All winners will be announced during the Downtown Bicycle Expo at Court Square. The awards ceremony will also include special recognition for the registered participant commuting from the farthest distance. The championship trophies will be provided courtesy of Memphis and Shelby County Health Department Pollution Control Section.

Downtown Bicycle Expo @Civic Center Plaza (in front of City Hall), 11:00am - 1:00pm

Hang out with other cyclists in celebration of Bike-to-Work Day! Activities include live music by Cayerio and Speakerboxx, presentation of the 2011 Bike-to-Work Championship awards by Rockey the Redbird, and a special Playground edition of PlayDate Memphis! In addition, get quick fitness tips and easy stretching routines for your bicycle commute. Whether you have a long or short commute, a greenline pleasure ride, or training for competition WellWorX Sporting Clubs will show you how to make your ride more enjoyable by starting out safe. Safety tips will be provided by bikeway/pedestrian coordinator Kyle Wagenshutz.

Tire-changing Clinic @Victory Bicycle Studio (2294 Young Ave), 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Learn how to fix a flat tire at this hands-on workshop presented by Memphis Hightailers Bicycle Club. There will be door prizes for everyone who participates! The clinic is free for Memphis Hightailers members (you can join at the door). Space is limited, so registration is required.

Bikesploitation @The Warehouse, 6 - 10pm

After work, ride down to The Warehouse and experience Bikesploitation, a bike and film festival featuring hand-picked bicycle films from all over the country!

Wednesday, May 25

Ladies' Night! @Peddler Bike Shop (575 S Highland), 6:30pm - 8:30pm

Hors d'oeuvres, wine, beer, soft drinks, and bikes! Peddler Bike Shop staff and Trek will share basic bicycle information for beginners, a bike clothing fashion show, and a sneak peek at the new Trek bicycles designed for women. There will be goody bags for all participants.
