Downtown Memphis is the region's primary medical center, offering top-notch health care at five major facilities. Children are a primary focus at two campuses: the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center. Founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962, St. Jude is the premier center for research and treatment of catastrophic diseases in children. Since opening its doors in 1952, Le Bonheur has earned a well-deserved position as a premier pediatric medical center for the Mid-South's infants, children, and adolescents. Comprehensive care is available at Methodist University Hospital, the Regional Medical Center at Memphis ("The Med"), and UT Medical Group, while the Veteran Administration Medical Center offers health care to nearly 200,000 veterans in the Mid-South. And plans call for the former Baptist Memorial Health Care facility to become the home to of the nonprofit BioTech Foundation, which will position the Medical District as an internationally recognized center for the development and commercialization of biomedical technology.
