arts and culture in downtown
Downtown Memphis has become a southern paradise for the arts.
Each year, the classic Orpheum Theatre draws over 500,000 people to its Broadway-style shows, concerts, and theatrical productions. The new state-of-the-art Cannon Center for the Performing Arts is the official home of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and hosts productions of the Memphis Ballet, Opera Memphis and other cultural events as well.
Along with these grand performance theatres are dozens of independent art galleries, particularly centralized in the South Main Arts District, that are gaining national attention. From folk art to abstract, Downtown art galleries capture the creative spirit of the Downtown community on canvas and sculpture.
The Indie Film Festival, a regional independent filmakers showcase, has stationed its annual festival in Downtown Memphis. This highly acclaimed event has become a starting point for many up and coming filmakers.
Also of note is the PowerHouse, a new and unique artist work space and exhibit hall in South Main Arts District. The PowerHouse was once the coal warehouse for Central Station and been transformed into a metropolitan center to showcase the arts.
