working in downtown
Downtown Memphis is the region's center for employment, business and economics. More than 80,000 employees work Downtown ... that's over 11 percent of the Memphis area population!

While Downtown is anchored by governmental, medical, and financial institutions and several large corporate headquarters, it also embraces the spirit of the small, independent entrepreneur. More than 1600 businesses enjoy being a part of this business community that offers a comfortable urban environment, after-work nightlife, easy commutes, accessible parking, and unique work spaces!

Whether your business is retail, service or professional, Downtown Memphis will work for you!

Katrina Shelton, owner of Tonic, a wonderful boutique in the South Main Arts District, saw South Main as a perfect place to open her shop. "I wanted to be a part of the resurgence of Downtown and I also wanted to open my business in a cultural and diverse area. I've lived in New York and Paris and I wanted be able to work in an area that I could draw from those experiences. It's a creative, culutral community!"

"You got to be in Downtown!" says Jason Hernandez, Director of Business Development for The Data Company. Ranked by Inc. Magazine as one of the fastest growing private companies in the nation, The Data Company offers specialized legal services nationwide. "We have a lot of national clients that visit from large metro areas and Downtown is a showcase for our city." The Data Company has been leasing space in Downtown since the 70's and purchased its own building on Court Avenue two years ago.

Betty Pittman is no stranger to Downtown. After working for 18 years at the architecture firm Hnedak Bobo Group, Betty has seen the transformation of Downtown up close. "When we moved into our new offices on Front Street, I said we may never go home! I was asked to become the firm's facilities director when they saw how much I cared for the building. And I just love being a part of this progressive environment."
