The Center City Commission is charged with keeping the public realm in Downtown clean, neat and attractive.
To that end, the CCC employs an Environmental Coordinator who works with various governmental agencies to ensure that appropriate efforts are being made to address health, cleanliness and maintenance concerns, including:
- Code Enforcement
- General Services
- Public Works
- Anti-Neglect
- Housing and Community Development
- the Health Department, and
- Memphis Light, Gas and Water.
Weekly inspections are made of the entire Central Business Improvement District, with special attention to vacant properties, trash and other sanitary concerns, lighting deficiencies, and safety hazards on both public and private properties. Recommendations are submitted to both city services and private property owners and enhancements are actively pursued, including the use of a group of inmates from the Shelby County Corrections Center to conduct weekly clean-up efforts.
The Center City Commission has also contracted with a private landscaping firm to ensure that the Main Street Mall and Court Square are well-maintained and attractive.
