Did you know that Downtown Memphis is ranked the safest precinct in the city of
Memphis?
But even with that designation, ensuring safety for residents, workers, and
visitors in Downtown is a priority for the Center City Commission. To do this,
the Center City Commission employs a Public Safety Coordinator who is
responsible for administering the Center City Commission's public safety
programs to ensure a safe, secure, and comfortable environment for Downtown
visitors, residents, and business people.
In addition, the CCC initiated the
creation of a Safety and Traffic Task Force made up of stakeholders from the
private and public sectors, including ranking officials from the Memphis Police
Department. The Task Force was originally established to coordinate special
event planning related to traffic flow, crowd management, and crime control.
The pro-active disposition of the Task Force eventually led it to consider
strategic planning for all downtown activities.
Currently, the CCC is operating a pilot program with private security officers. Their mission is to target quality of life offenses such as aggressive panhandling, disorderly conduct and public intoxication. They act as an additional resource with social service providers to help the truly needy. The CCC security personnel are committed to increasing the perception of safety by providing efficient delivery of security, referral and hospitality related services to all individuals within the Central Business Improvement District (CBID) through compassion, fairness and excellence.
Their goal is to assist in improving the overall quality of life in the CBID by complementing the peace keeping role of the Memphis Police Department. The security officers can be reached on the street at (901)281-9146.
The Center City Commission's Blue Suede Brigade, our on-the-street ambassadors, also provide monitoring and direct reporting to the downtown precinct.
