"Light It Up!: The Downtown Illumination Project" promotes good lighting design for the public realm, public and private development projects, and public events throughout Downtown. Creative lighting design on building façades showcases our architecture and urban elements for a more visually interesting cityscape and highlights the extraordinary revitalization of Downtown Memphis.
Illumination helps address perceived safety concerns by brightening otherwise dark alleys and improving the pedestrian experience. It also promotes economic growth by identifying retail locations and inviting more visitor traffic to the area. Businesses within an illuminated building benefit from increased evening commerce due to an greater sense of security for both customers and employees. The use of innovative lighting technology helps to create a positive image for community as a whole and adds a greater sense of character and expression to the continually rejuventating Downtown area.
The Center City Commission offers bonus incentives to developers who incorporate decorative lighting design into their projects. An eligible project can receive an additional year through the PILOT proram or up to an additional $5,000 through the development loan program by participating in the Light It Up! initiative.
