Countless churches and religious organizations serve the spiritual needs of Downtown Memphians. Over forty churches in Downtown offer services for many different religious affiliations.
The first Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, and Methodist churches in the city were founded in downtown and hold service each Sunday. The Church Of God In Christ (COGIC), whose world headquarters is based in Downtown Memphis, has 5.5 million members and draws thousands to Memphis each year for the International Holy Convocation. And Memphis' first African-American Disciples of Christ church, Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, is also the nation's largest congregation in that religious denomination with 8,000 members.
The Downtown Churches Association brings these religious entities together to create community programs and to offer a united voice.
