With a flourishing artistic community, beautiful performance venues and galleries, and support through arts-oriented organizations, Downtown Memphis has emerged as the region's center for arts and culture.
The new state-of-the-art Cannon Center for the Performing Arts is the official home of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and hosts productions of the Memphis Ballet, Opera Memphis, Cultural Development Foundation and other events as well. Orpheum Theatre is lauded as the city's premiere theatre, bringing Broadway shows, concerts and productions to local theatre lovers.
Along with these grand performance theatres are dozens of independent art galleries, particularly centralized in the South Main Arts District and The Edge, that are gaining national attention. From folk art to abstract, Downtown art galleries capture the creative spirit of the Downtown community on canvas and sculpture.
Each year, Delta Axis presents The Indie Film Festival, a regional independent filmakers showcase and acclaimed event that has become a starting point for many up and coming filmakers. Downtown has become a backdrop for not only these indie films, but also for feature films like "Walk the Line", "21 Grams" and "Hustle and Flow".
Art in all forms has a profound impact on our community. For example, Dance Works is a special program that provides an opportunity for the lower-income and disadvantaged families of our community to participate in the art of dance. This successful program emphasizes classical ballet as the foundation, which in turn serves as a springboard to introduce other dance forms such as creative dance, modern, jazz, and ethnic dance.
