SPEAK OUT! Support legislation to stop aggressive panhandling and disorderly
street behavior!
Downtown needs your support of two ordinances that will go a long way
in preventing aggressive panhandling and drunken, disorderly street behavior. The ordinances will:
Ban the sale of single beers within the Downtown Core.
Restrict panhandling to selected designated sites.
Over the past decade, nearly $5 billion worth of new investment has changed the
face of Downtown Memphis. It is imperative that we protect that investment by
making sure Downtown is an inviting and comfortable place. Unfortunately, the
perception of safety is still too often jeopardized by the disorderly actions
of a small group of offenders. Steps have been taken to stop unacceptable
street behavior, but now we must do even more.
In the weeks ahead, the Center City Commission will be proposing two ordinances
to the City Council that we believe could make a dramatic difference in
addressing the chronic misconduct of a few. Your support and advocacy
are essential in helping to pass these ordinances.
How Can You Support These Ordinances?
Step 1. Contact your city council representative!
City council members listen to their constituents. Send a letter, an email or

City Council will hear from the public and vote on the ordinances on Tuesday, April 13 at 3:30 pm. Attendance from supporters with signs at this meeting is extremely critical!
