Gibson GuitarTown guitar public art on display on Beale Street
Memphis artists now have Beale Street as a canvas with the latest artists "GuitarTown" guitars on display.
Gibson Foundation, the philanthropic piece of Gibson Brands, named Memphis its next "GuitarTown" in April 2016. You can now see the guitars on display on America's Most Iconic Street.
Twenty copies of B.B. King’s legendary Lucille style guitars stand ten feet tall throughout birthplace of the Blues, with a good number of them being in downtown, specifically Beale Street.
Memphis GutiarTown celebrates the unique and important music & art contributions of the city. It consists of 20 10-ft tall artistically designed Lucille guitar sculptures, customized by local Memphis visual artists, signed by Memphis celebrities and partnered with Memphis businesses.
The sculptures have been strategically placed at businesses throughout the city for 4-6 months since the start of 2017, and will culminate with an Auction Event in 2017 to raise funds for two of Memphis’ premier causes: the Memphis Charitable Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. 100% of the net proceeds raised from this program will benefit the charities. There will also be a like number of artistically designed actual guitars included as part of the project.
“GuitarTown is a project that is near and dear to Gibson Brands, allowing us to share these amazing pieces of art in cities across the country while also giving back through each GuitarTown auction. We’re thrilled to bring the latest installation to the Home of the Blues in a fitting tribute to legendary musician B.B. King and to support the tremendous work of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Memphis Charitable Foundation.”
- Henry Juszkiewicz, Gibson Chairman/CEO
Gibson Foundation (the charitable division of Gibson Brands, Inc.) has successfully raised more than $3 million for charitable causes through GuitarTown projects in Nashville, Austin, Sunset Strip, Orlando, Miami, Waukesha (WI) and London, UK. We know that Memphis’ GuitarTown project will be as successful – if not more so – than any of our previous GuitarTown projects.
