Where & How to (Safely) See the Eclipse in Downtown Memphis
Total Solar Eclipse - Monday, August 21, 2017
In case you haven't heard - there's a solar eclipse on Monday. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, partially or totally obscuring the image of the Sun for viewers on Earth. What some folks will experience on Monday is a total solar eclipse, which happens when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun. In some areas (see map image), the moon will block all direct sunlight and turn daylight into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across the surface of the Earth, with most of us experiencing a partial eclipse. (Nashville will get the total eclipse experience for a whopping 1 min 57 seconds.)
This will be the first American eclipse to occur since February 26, 1979, and Downtown has a few fun ways to view the eclipse and join the party!
