Two Beale Street Design Contests Announced
Beale Archway & Handy Park Design Contest Open
The Downtown Memphis Commission announced two Beale Street centered design contests. The first is the Handy Park Design Challenge, and the other is the Beale Street Archway Contest. Both contests open on March 6, with the Archway contest closing on March 19, and the Handy Park Challenge closing on April 27.
The Handy Park Design Challenge asks applicants to reimagine the park as a higher-functioning multi-purpose venue, while the Beale Street Archway Contest solicits input on the facade(s) of two steel archways being constructed on Beale.
"We had been planning the Handy Park Challenge for some time," stated Jennifer Oswalt, president and CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission. “As for the Beale Archway Contest, we decided to open it up after public response to the initial RFP-winning drawings. Beale is one of our greatest cultural assets and we just think we can do better. Better for Beale Street and Better for Downtown."
