public art
and lighting
The Center City Commission believes that public art and good lighting design are essential elements to enhance the public realm in Downtown. Interesting public art expresses the character of a city and creates a visually interesting cityscape that highlights our extraordinary revitalization in Downtown Memphis.
The Center City Commission supports the efforts of the UrbanArt Commission in bringing thoughtful art to the public realm. In addition, CCC works directly with individual artists to engage them in the Downtown community by coordinating exhibits in public spaces and facilitating on-street performances through the international-awarding series, Downtown Alive!
Similarly, CCC promotes good lighting design. Illumination helps address perceived safety concerns by brightening otherwise dark alleys and improving the pedestrian experience. It also promotes economic growth by identifying retail locations and inviting more visitor traffic to the area.
The Center City Commission offers bonus incentives to developers who incorporate decorative lighting design into their projects. An eligible project can receive an additional year through the PILOT proram or up to an additional $5,000 through the development loan program by participating in the Light It Up! initiative. For more information about these incentives, please contact the Planning & Development department at 901.575.0540.
