What's not to love about downtown Memphis? It’s creative, diverse, one of the safest areas in the city, surprising, unexpected and lively – must I go on about how great it is?!? I am an employee, resident, and frequent patron of downtown, and honestly there is no other place in Memphis I would rather be. Downtown has been great to me since my move back home from DC. Downtown Memphis resembled that big city, urban lifestyle I had in DC, but with the Southern charm and draw that brought me back home to Memphis; it was the best of both worlds! In addition, I met my beau in downtown Memphis during one of my magazine interviews and we have used Downtown Memphis as our mecca for creating lasting memories. Downtown Memphis gets love from me, because there is no other place I’d rather be :)!

I love the river, particularly the sunsets. When I'm coming home from work and I see the sun setting over the river, it makes me happy! It is also next to the river that I became engaged last winter...as the sun was setting, we were at the lookout point, and he asked me to marry him.
Bonnie
I love the "big city" feeling when we go out to eat downtown!
Beth
Memphis is a City of diversified people, who have merged together in a location full of excitement, culture and history. With a surprise around most corners, it seems the allure of excitement never ends in the Birthplace of Blues and Rock & Roll! The downtown district, be it Beale Street, the Arts District or the many fascinating events and complexes in the downtown area, are the center-point for a City bursting at the seams with things to do, see and experience! To describe what the downtown area has to offer is best done with one statement; "Seeing is believing ... that's Downtown Memphis!"
Charles
What i love about downtown is the serenity of the river, harbor town and the nice restaurants. i reminds me of a romantic city such as paris or italy. i love the lights and the people that comes out at night. i love the diversity of the downtown atmosphere. the people i've come in contact with are those that want to have fun. i use to frequent the madison hotel on thursday when they had the rooftop parties. i so enjoyed the dancing and the music. i love interacting with the diverse group that frequented the madison hotel. i love downtown memphis because it also has southern hospitality as well as the romance of other cities...

One of the great loves of my life is Downtown Memphis. My breath is taken away as soon as I round the corner on Riverside Drive and get the first glimpse of the bridge centered over the Mighty Mississippi River. Then I can hardly wait to take a walk through history with the many wonderful places all within walking distance of the river. The Orpheum with all of its intricate beauty - the perfect place to see a play. The Peabody - whether staying at the hotel or just visiting the lobby you take a trip back in time. The beauty of this historical hotel is unique to our city. Then take a walk over to Beale Street to take in all of our musical heritage and talent. Autozone Park and The FedExForum provide us with fantastic baseball and basketball entertainment. Let's not forget all of the fabulous restaraunts. There is something for everyone in Downtown Memphis. I could visit Downtown 7 days a week and never tire of all it has to offer.
Debbie
Downtown Memphis has an ever evolving assortment of possibilities for dining, shopping, and entertainment. Anytime that out of town guests visit, we can go downtown and enjoy the entire day or evening there. It has everything we need. Even though I have lived in Memphis for 4.5 years now, I still continue to find great things there.
Matt
What I love most about downtown Memphis is the mix between the artsy galleries and shops of South Main and the soulful heritage of Beale St. and the surrounding community. Downtown Memphis is a place for all Memphians to come together and enjoy the culture of the city and have some fun! Downtown Memphis is so unique and full of treasures just waiting to be discovered. Whether you are a Tiger, a Grizzly, or a Redbird, Downtown has sporting and concert venues for everyone!
Lauren
I am such a water baby - having the river right there is so peaceful and calming and therapeutic! And the people watching - never a dull moment! Love living downtown!!!
susan
I love that downtown Memphis seems to be the one place that brings this community together. When you are downtown everyone shares one common goal, to have a good time. Whether it's cheering on our sports teams, enjoying local food or listening to up and coming musicians. Nothing brings our city together like a night out on the town!
Cara
I love Memphis because of the cultural. Turning any corner in Memphis you never know what music you are going to hearor what events will be going on. I love going downtown to have dinner and then walk around afterwards to see all of the happenings! From Beale Street to the Pinch, Downtown Memphis is filled with great food and great people!
Lindy
First I must say that I find Downtown Memphis very beautiful.
It has a special flavor, and those of us that live here understand this.
Having it's own unique appeal, is what it makes it wonderous.
The click claks of the horses, the sound and light of the trolley when it runs down the tracks, the fountains when they are rising to the air.
There is a moment to be capured in Memphis, and the moment can be always held in your heart.
Robert
I watch it's history on WKNO and it is unreal, the changes that have happened over the years. The "Cotton Capital of The World". Now the major leader of distrubution, as it has always been. The places to eat-places- to go-Beal St.- Main St.-Front St. I've been in Memphis all my life and we go downtown to spend the night, go to a concert, walk around, BBQ Contest. Memphis Downtown has it all. If you don't believe me just go there you will love it. I took my kids on a "Vacation to Memphis" years ago, picked up some brochures from the Hyatt at Ridgeway. I am sure the people there thought "What a cheap SOB, but I showed my kids Memphis. They loved it. We had so much fun my wife left work and met us Downtown. In Memphis. !!!!!!!!
Gary
Downtown Memphis has so much to offer anyone, whether you are a first time visitor, or a native Memphian-the city always has something new to experience, a memory to share, or something to love. Memphis has an amazing history from its early days to the present, and completely reflects the changing face of American culture. As a viewer of the downtown area you have the historic sites of early Memphis, a small (but in our mind's-significant) Civil War battle, the Pinch District's colorful history, the tragic legacy of the Yellow Fever epidemics, the rise of and fall of the Crump era, the historic significance of the Lorraine Motel and what Dr. Martin Luther King's death meant to the world and an amazingly rich and diverse community. There are also the the cultural and civic events that impact the area including Memphis in May, the South Main Arts District, and the world famous St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Memphis has a fabulous entertainment industry as well, including one of the 11 national Grammy Foundation offices, Beale Street, Fed Ex Forum, the Grizzlies, Redbirds, an active film commission that promotes the city, some of the best restaurants in the delta, a host of events at the Cannon Center and the beautiful Orpheum Theatre. No trip to downtown is complete without walking in Memphis (singing that particular song in the pouring rain), carriage rides, and a visit to the world famous Peabody Hotel. Of course what always seems to bring people back to downtown Memphis is that glorious view of the Mississippi River, where you can walk the GreenBelt and get a crystal clear view the Pyramid, a spectacular sunset and see sparkling night lights reflecting on the water from the Mississippi Bridge. There is something for everyone to fall in lovevwith in Downtown Memphis (and I am only a little biased).
Catherine
There is so much to downtown Memphis, it's history, it's night life, it's soul! There so much that there are few words to actually describe it. My wife and I had our first date downtown and for the next seven years most of our dates either started or ended up in downtown Memphis. Once we got married last May we moved to downtown Memphis down on South Front St. There is no other feeling than stepping out of our building and on to Front St. I myself have grown to have a passion for downtown memphis. When vistors come in from out of town, downtown is where they come to visit, and downtown Memphis welcomes with southern hospitality. My wife and I love downtown Memphis and there is no better place to start the rest of our lives than here!
Robert
I love the sunsets!
Brenda
Memphis is a city that has many great hidden secrets. You have to get to know the city to truly appreciate all that it offers.
Corbett
I grew up near downtown Memphis.. My brother and I use to ride our bikes downtown to buy peanuts and candy. I bought a gift for my mother from the jewelry store. on Main St.(after having it in the lay-a-way for 3 months) We loved the Cotton Carnival on the river and the Cotton Makers' Jubilee on Beale. We shopped from Goldsmith's. to Lowenstein, to Black and White. We watched movies upstairs at the Malco, and had lunch at the downstairs segregated lunch counter in Woolworths. Downtown was wonderful.
Now that it is coming back, I am so excited. My wife and I often walk the mall, enjoy the events in Court Square, and love to eat at the new restaurants. Before a Grizzlies or Tiger game we eat on Beale and just walk and enjoy the stores and people watching.
My son had a condo before he moved from Memphis, and now my granddaughter is taking dance at 55 S. Main (the same address where I bought the gift for my mother). Downtown is once again becoming a place for families, and I for one am glad to see it.
Ridley
Downtown Memphis holds a special place in my heart, because that is where I found the love of my life. There's something magical about walking on cobblestones, while moonlight reflects on the river and the Memphis bridge lights. That is why I love Downtown Memphis.
Denise
Everything...Food,Music and Entertainment
Billy
The night life and the art district!!
SANDRA
My husband and I married at the Holiday Inn Rivermont 36 years ago on our honeymoon. Downtown Memphis brings back fond memories that my husband and I can and will cherish for a lifetime. I love the history and the music. I love "Walking in Memphis" and knowing the history and how it has changed and grown throughout the years. I love the memories of walks by the river, music at country on Beale, concerts with my family, shows at the Orpheum, the Peabody, and spending time with my dad back in the day when I was a child at Union Planters. I loved riding the bus downtown when I was young and seeing the city, fearless and hopeful. Downtown gives me hope and brings memories as well as joyful tears.
Charlene
I love, absolutely love, the vibe. The ever-present feeling that something is always going on downtown. I'm not from Memphis originally, but when I moved here I was blown away by the activity, the happening, the great feel you get when you're downtown. Like there's something in the air, something to anticipate.
I work downtown and feel lucky that I get to be here every day, at the center of it all.
Jennifer
Downtown Memphis has so much to offer. Great places to eat and hang out with friends or family. Grizzlies. Redbirds. The river. Just walking around. My husband and I love to drive down and run the riverwalk on Sunday mornings. Everyone you pass is there because they love Memphis and they love being on river and enjoying our greatest attraction!
Barbara
Heart & soul - that's it in a nutshell. It's the way the city seems to be sitting on a hill made of mud and rock just watching Ol' Man River roll! In Memphis, relaxing to a gentle breeze coming off of the bluff while enjoying a good meal at any of the many downtown eateries is "on the one." Needless to say, if you're bored downtown, you really need to consider getting a life. Downtown Memphis, folks! You can walk it or ride it ... but you just gotta do it!
Lorece
I LOVE THE MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES!!!!!! I will support them no matter what. Go Griz!
Bryan
For me, I LOVE sitting in Tom Lee Park at night watching and listening to the Memphis Queen Riverboat plough water under its pedal as it moves slowly down the Mississippi. Then there is the halo of lights that shapes an arch of the Memphis-Arkansas Bridge. Nothing is more beautiful. I also treasure the warmth of Blues, Jazz, R&B, and Soul music that embraces me during my carriage ride down Beale Street. Stax Records recording comes alive as I look at young and old humming and bopping their heads to the beats of Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding and Elvis Presley. Finally, a trip to the Orpheum to see “Robin Thicke, and Jennifer Hudson,” elevates my devotion to Memphis. The upscale theatre with its elegance makes me feel special. And everybody knows this because the evening gowns and Tux’s won’t hide it. But Downtown Memphis is so much more. For some Memphian and tourists, it’s a way to take advantage of the Southern cuisine, FedEx Golf Tournament, Southern Heritage Classic, Memphis in May, celebrate the Memorial of Elvis or enjoy the Liberty Bowl Football game. But for me, it’s home and a place of refuge. “Give Me Memphis, Tn”
Ethel
Beale Street and Main Street! They’re the lifelines of downtown and provide a venue for Memphians to get out and enjoy our great art, food, and music. Events like the Art Trolley Tour bring out the best of downtown!
Alex
I love the Trolley Nights on South Main. Its wonderful to be able to stroll down Main Street with a cool glass of wine in my hand, my husband on my arm and great art in the galleries. There are always so many exciting and interesting people strolling around with us, the smell of good food in the area from local restaurants, it is quite a night out! We always look forward to the last Friday of the month.
Maria
Everything!, but most of all - the memory of spending my honeymoon with my beautiful wife at The Peabody 23 years ago!
jim
What I love most about downtown Memphis is all of the fond memories. From feeding the birds, summer weekends on Mud Island, carraige rides with my family after dinner, to the lighting of the Hernando DeSoto Bridge (the new bridge). After graduating college, I couldn't wait to move back and get to know downtown as a young adult. Having a blast so far...
sarah
The history and architecture of Main Street and D'town. I try to imagine all the people that walked there before me, what they did, what they wore...what life had been like back then.
Penn
What I love BEST about Downtown Memphis is the GREAT PEOPLE!! Everyone who lives, works, or plays Downtown has some love affair with Memphis, and I believe their enthusiastic attitude and contagious energy are really what's causing Downtown to thrive!
SARAH
no doubt, what I love about D'town Memphis is the way a full moon shimmers on the currents of the Mighty Missisip! It casts a spell over the river...it's as if all the souls of the steamboat days of old are resurrected for few brief hours.
Nicole
I love that Downtown Memphis is a tourist hot-spot as well as a friendly neighborhood. I can go to eat at world famous restaurants and listen to the incredible sounds of local musicians and then ride the trolley back home where my neighbors are walking their dogs or playing outside with their kids. I love the since of community and southern pride that all Memphians feel. This is My Downtown Memphis...My Home.
Courtney
I just love Downtown Memphis! Although I live only a few miles away in Cordova, when I am spending time downtown, I feel like I'm far away from home. Sometimes I pretend like I'm a tourist because so often locals don't take the time to enjoy what their own city has to offer, and Memphis, especially downtown Memphis has a lot to offer. Nightlife activities and daytime fun are enjoyed by both the visitors and the locals. Downtown Memphis has culture, it has style, it has character and it has history. It has Blues and all other kinds of Music, Barbecue and all other kinds of food...and it has the Mighty Mississippi. I love Downtown Memphis.
Debbie
Absolutely everybody and ever establishment. I was relocated for work 17 months ago to Memphis, bought my condo downtown in April and have inspired many others to support downtown restaurants, shop and enjoy the atmosphere - life is too short not to love MEMPHIS!
Hummingbird
EVERYTHING! I have lived Downtown since 1989 and have loved seeing it come so alive! Especially with the new energy and excitment created by the UofM Law School.
Downtown is truly the heart and soul of Memphis
Susan
The feeling you get being downtown. Walking, street cars, horse carriages the options are GREAT! I love having a nice dinner at restaurant, seeing the sunset over the river, enjoying a sporting event or concert and then being able to go out dancing to some great music on Beale. It's a vacation!
Tracy
Despite the obvious (fun, exciting, dining, etc) I love the people. Downtowners are passionate about our city and love to preach the benefits of Downtown to the naysayers!!
Joey
I love the mixing of the old and the new. It has maintained a rich cultural history, but in recent years began the process of a facelift with new additions such as the Fedex Forum and the Westin Hotel. Hopefully this concoction of old South and 21st century will continue; for example, the redesign of Tom Lee Park and old beautiful buildings now becoming condos. Downtown is a cool place that hasn't forgotten her roots!
Braden
I love downtown because it is my home - beautiful scenery, Mississippi river, bridge especially at nights when the ligths are on, Memphis in May, FedEx Forum, RedBirds Stadium, Orpheum, Farmer's Market, wide-range of great food and restaurants, Mud Island, Mud Island river park, beautiful houses and condos, and people from diverse background. I should add my 2.5 year old's fav - Beale Street late afternoon when all the neon lights on and tourists strolling on the street!
Gokcen
Downtown is a great place to see: a show, a game, music, good food, marching ducks, great shopping, the River, interesting architecture, beautiful hotels, horse drawn carriages, the bridge lit up at night, the government, and interesting people walking the streets everyday!
Mark
I love the energy of the people. Great food and good times;)
Amanda
There are many things I love about downtown Memphis. But the one that I love the most is the music scene. Whether its a blues band at BB Kings, a jam band at the New Daisy, or a big name act at the Fed Ex Forum, downtown Memphis always has something going on.
Kenny
I love everything about Downtown Memphis and I would not live anywhere else in this City. Living on Mud Island for 9 years I still get the same feeling every night when I drove over the bridge and see the sun setting on the Mississippis River. The feeling is immediate stress releif and relaxation. Seeing all of the people walking and running along the riverfront, sitting on blankets with a glass of wine or walking their dog is a wonderful sight and a great sense of community. Once Downtown I never have to leave beause I have everything I need. There are many great locally owned restaurants that offer several different cusine options that are the best in the City. Having first class basketball teams, concerts, Broadway shows and world famous Beale Street Musicans at our finger tips is more than anyone could need. And Parking is fun! and inexpensive! I love Downtown becasue I feel like I am on vacation every day!
Lana
Downtown Memphis leaves you with a very nostalgic feeling once your gone. The people are friendly and its very inviting atmosphere, with a lot of history.
Latanya
I love the view as you come over the bridge into downtown
Memphis. The sunsets on the river are beautiful.
The Peabody is also one of my favorite things about downtown.
The Fed Ex Forum is a great place and AutoZone Park.
There are many great places to eat and listen to Music.
It's simply a wonderful place!!
Martha
I love the atmosphere. You can dine, take a carriage ride and fall in love with your sweetheart all over again!! Also, there is always shopping or strolling down Beale Street that makes you forget all of your worries! I just love Memphis for everything it has to offer!
allison
I lov ethe fact that it is easy to get to, low cost of living, is clean and people friendly, and for a recent mover from SC, is very open and easy to find your way around in. I am looking forward to many many visits to downtown Memphis.
Mark
No matter what mood I'm in, or who I'm with, there's something to do downtown. We can take in a game, go to a show or just relax and take in the rich history of the city. I have never been dissappointed because every trip to Memphis we've discovered something new or revisited some place unforgettable. Oh, and one more thing that is reason enough to come back: THE FOOD!
Crissy
I love that in Downtown Memphis there is something for everyone. Whatever you like to do can be done there. I enjoy walking by the river when the weather is nice or just being on Beale street. It has such an active night life and wonderful music on Beale.
Amber
I love the transformation downtown Memphis has gone through in my lifetime. I remember going to Tiger's games with my dad and being told how dangerous and scary those streets were. However, whenever I go downtown now I see families walking to Redbirds games, couples out on dates, and hipsters enjoying the vibrant local music scene. Nowhere else can you find the worlds best barbeque joints, a (winning!!!) NBA team, the Beale Street Flippers, and ducks that live at a hotel within a few blocks of each other. And, there is nothing like South Main on an early Saturday morning when the Memphis Farmer's Market is buzzing.
Sophie
When I first visited Downtown Memphis, I knew it would hold a special place in my heart. My boyfriend and I love taking day trips to Beale Street. It never gets old and that is partly due to what we treasure the most: trips to A Schwab- a store that has the most unique items, watching the people doing cartwheels or performances on Beale Street or just plain people watching :), the beauty of the old buildings, and the Peabody ducks we see for our entertainment after dinner. I know that when my boyfriend and I take a trip to Downtown Memphis we will make a memory and enjoy true southern hospitality even if we do the same exact thing every time.Downtown Memphis is our city. The city that always takes care of us.
Julie
I've grown up in the South, and Memphis is my favorite place. Beale Street is some of the most fun a person can have, whether it be on a Saturday night in the clubs, or a Sunday afternoon listening to music on the grounds, letting the kids play, having lunch at Hard Rock. One of my children's favorite childhood memories is Mud Island. Going there was a real treat, actually walking the trail of the Mississippi, hearing the history....really great. The buildings in the downtown area are so beautiful, they've been well kept, sometimes even restored. I love the city of Memphis...but the downtown area is my favorite, all the neat places to eat, the river, everything.
Denise
I love everything about Downtown Memphis. There's an amazing restaurant on every corner, the smell of barbeque as soon as you get out of your car, a true sense of community among the residents, rocking music pumping out of the joints, and more fun packed into one section of town than you can find anywhere else. My absolute favorite thing about Downtown, though, is Saturday mornings on South Main. Every Saturday, April through October, my husband and I pack the baby up and head downtown as soon as we wake up. We park on the street across from Blue Monkey, unpack the stroller, and head over to the Farmers Market. We drink coffee, visit with the vendors, check out all the produce, sit and listen to the live entertainment, pet a couple of dogs up for adoption, buy a ton of fresh fruits/veggies/baked good, and catch up with any friends we run into. Then we're off to have a late breakfast at the Arcade, hopefully outside on the sidewalk so we can people watch. We finish our Saturday mornings by strolling all over Downtown and checking out anythying and everything. You get a true sense of community on these mornings- no touristy stuff, just downtowners/Memphians doing what they do. We go home and look forward to Saturday morning again all week long!
Scarlett
I love the wide variety of things to do all within walking distance of each other. And the people! Whoa the people.
Andy
My love for Downtown Memphis is of the long distance variety, in many ways (I don't live in Memphis, but my boyfriend, best friend, and favorite Children's Research Hospital do!). Whether attending a wedding (and dance party) at Earnestine and Hazel's, enjoying some yummy chicken from Gus's, or watching the talented filmmakers show their work at Li'l film fest, there's always something exciting to see and do. I love Memphis!
Kristin
I love the beautiful old buildings, and the views of the mighty Mississippi!
stephanie
Downtown has such a wide variety of things to do, and they are close enough you can do them in one day or night if you want.
Jason
There is just something incredibly special about Downtown Memphis. Whether it's a trip to Beale Street with in-town business guests, a summer's evening with the family at Auto Zone Park, a romantic dinner with that special someone at one of the many fantastic restaurants, or just taking in the amazing views of the Mississippi River... I love downtown Memphis!
Jon
I love the sights and sounds of downtown. The old architecture blended in with the newly modernized buildings give downtown such an eclectic look. Head over to South Main and enjoy great works of art as well as a great breakfast at the Arcade. Beale Street is always hopping, and Main Street has so many good restaurants. Head over to Tom Lee Park and enjoy a peaceful view of the river. No matter where you are from, or what you love, downtown Memphis has something enjoyable for everyone.
Michael
The best, most memorable thing about downtown Memphis is the scenery. The bridge is lovely, the lights at night, and the Mississippi River looks fantastic. The music, the culture and city sounds are so lovely. I keep a smile from ear to ear from the time I park my car to walk around downtown wit h my significant other. I visit every weekend because I live and hour away, and have never been disappointed with my experiences. There's something about how much the atmosphere calms you and just whispers in your ear that no matter what you're going to have a great time!
Precious
I love downtown Memphis because I have been able to share wonderful experiences with friends, coworkers, children and grandchildren. Back in the 80s, we spent many nights with our neighborhood friends dancing the night away at a popular restaurant & night spot, Captain Bilbo's. We also ventured over to the Peabody and listened to Jerry Lee and Jason D blast away on the piano. The Peabody and Radisson hotels were regularly visited for work related meetings & the hotel staff were always so great and accommodating. Of course, my kids loved seeing the Peabody ducks & watching the fireworks on the river. Now I enjoy going to the Orpheum for ballet, dramas, & musicals & the Fed Ex Forum & Mud Island for concerts and games with my daughter & grandkids. Memphis has given me lasting memories for more than 25 years & I look forward to many more!
Janet
Yea… I couldn't pick just one, and so I give you:
Top 10 Things That I Love About Downtown Memphis
10. Blue City Café… the fried catfish and sausage plate... enough said.
9. Grizzlies games... the whole experience is great whether we win or lose. Having an NBA team in this city is fun... being right in the action, with a plate of BBQ nachos in your lap and cheering on Rudy Gay and OJ Mayo.
8. The South Main Trolley Tour... I love that once a month you can hop on the trolley downtown and take a tour of the many art galleries and see the work of countless, talented Memphis artists (George Hunt is a personal favorite,) all while sipping on some wine and getting to spend some time in beautiful downtown Memphis.
7. The Arcade Restaurant... oh how those sweet potato pancakes call my name every weekend!
6. Alfred's on Beale... there is nothing like dancing all night long while Kevin and Bethany Paige sing everyone's favorite songs.
5. Memphis in May … the music, the BBQ, the mud, the sunset symphony... every moment downtown during the month of May is memorable. 4. The Memphis Farmer's Market... a great addition to the downtown area in the last 2 years. There are great people, great music, incredibly fresh fruit and vegetables, and it gives everyone that opportunity to meet the person growing your food.
3. Summer Movie Series at The Orpheum... every summer I look forward to the new additions to the summer movie line-up. It costs less money than it does to see a recently released film at any theater in town. The highlight for me is being able to watch Casablanca on the huge screen at the historical theater and enjoying that film the way it was meant to be seen!
2. The Peanut Shoppe... the smells that come from this store are amaaaazing. I'm pretty sure that the owner has this magical capability to memorize the face and order of everyone that walks through their doors. Spanish peanuts and candy corn are a delicious, must-try combo.
1. The Madison Rooftop... ever since The Madison Hotel opened I've been taking any visiting friends and family to show them the most breathtaking view of the Memphis Bridge, the MS River and my favorite city!
Laurie
What's not to love? Everything I need is walking distance or a short(trolley)ride away!! I work & live in the downtown area & one thing that never cease to amaze me is how much enthusiasm downtown-ers give when talking to tourist. Weather it's giving directions, the "inside scoop" or just little tidbits of information you just don't see that in many cities. Oh, and we have the 'Blue Suede Brigade'...pretty cool in my book.
Tawni
Downtown Memphis has the most beautiful scenery. I love the looking out over the river at night. The lights are wonderful. The sounds, sights, and the air is calming, especially when I'm with my wife. One can see so many different things like the FedEx Forum and the AutoZone baseball field, and the many different hotels, eateries, and clubs. I fall in love with the city every single time I visit. It's just simply unforgettable.
William
Even though I live in Memphis, I never really feel as though I am part of our city until I go downtown. Whether you come over the bridge or drive in on Poplar Avenue, the outline of the tall, impressive buildings assure you that something exciting is close by. From fabulous restaurants, shopping, sporting events, concerts, great hotels, or just sitting on a bench and watching the Mississippi River flow by, there is something for everyone. As Petula Clark sings," the lights are much brighter there, you can forget all your troubles, forget all your cares, and go DOWNTOWN! " The heart of Memphis is downtown and it can't help but touch yours when you visit.
Traci
I love Redbirds day games in the middle of the week.
C
The Atmosphere.... Main St, Beale St, Fedex Forum, Autozone Park, trolley rides, the MS river!
Paige
i love the ducks@ peabody..the Elvis souvenir stores and Tater Reds on Beale..FedEx fourm..The Mississippi River...Mud Island..Spagetti Wearhouse..Main street...I LOVE ALL THE HOMELESS PEOPLE TOO
bruce
I love the size of it all. It's small enough to get around easily by car, bike, trolley, or foot. It's quaint as far as mid sized cities go with not as many sky scrapers, and that's part of the allure. It feels separate from the rest of Memphis, yet it is still distinctly Memphis. There's so much history downtown. I am glad that it has come almost full circle from where it was 15 years ago. The night life is fantastic, and the in the day there are tons of fantastic places/buildings to offer up to the photography gods.
Jeremy
I love the trolley! There's a lot of great restaurants!
April
I love the different cultures and people that come together to make downtown unique.
Ross
There is always a new experience when I head downtown. Go Grizz!
Francis
What I love about downtown is the trolley. Perfect entertainment for my small child (and for $1), or great for taking it down the Orpheum, a restaurant, or an art gallery while on a date with my hubby.
Tiffany
What I love about Downtown Memphis is its history, its soul, and its beauty. Go walking down almost any street downtown in the warm glow of the streetlights at night, the sultry summer air caressing your skin and you will see that Memphis is alive and made of magic. There is no place like Memphis.
Lauren
It would be easier for me to tell you what I DON'T love about Downtown....but that's is not what you asked for!
Downtown Memphis has so much to do & see. The people are, by & large, wonderful, friendly, and welcoming. The variety of restaurants is great. There's art, music, shows, shopping, museums...truly there is something for everyone.
Music Fest has to be one of my favorite Downtown events each year. The carriage rides are wonderful, the performers on Beale are fantastic. Really, what is NOT to love about Downtown?
Christine
I love the mix of locals and tourists, I love the historical buildings and the modern vibe, and I love, love, love the restaurant options.
Leslie
I love going downtown Memphis because it's so lively. When I go there's always a variety of things to do. There's always great places to eat. I don't mind walking around downtown. The lights and scenery are wonderful. It's a place that my spouse and I are both comfortable being and can enjoy ourselves. The culture, the different people, and music is also a plus.

The scenery is great. The feeling you get when you're there is unbelievable. I take my girlfriend because she loves downtown Memphis. She gets the biggest, brightest, most prettiest glow and smile about her when we're there together. And that's when I say perfect; because that's all I aim for is to make her smile. So downtown Memphis brings my significant other and I joy because its a beautiful, interesting place to hang out and it doesn't ever get old. I can be there forever.
Jeremy
I love that Downtown is always interesting- no two days or nights are ever the same!
Chris
I love downtown for several reasons, First, for its unique atmosphere - especially Fourth Street to the River. Visiting here is like going on vacation to a completely different city. Second, I love to explore downtown. No matter how many times you're there, you'll always find new attractions (for me, the Slave Haven on N 2nd St. is a prime example),or new features within familiar places. I can't forget the River, and Harbor Town. But, Downtown's most outstanding feature is its people ... especially those who live and work Downtown. They are some of the most friendly, helpful, outgoing, and generous in all of Memphis.
John
I love everything about downtown. I'm lucky to work on South Main Street where my office overlooks the trolley tracks - its beautiful! We have a great selection of restaurants to walk to for lunch and I love seeing so many people getting out the office for a quick bit to eat. Not to mention an even better bar selection to hit up after a long day at work for a little happy hour extravaganza. Its really great to see downtown come to life during the day and really light up at night with Beale Street, the Orpheum and all the fabulous restaurants. Downtown really is my favorite part of the entire city!
Julie
What's there not to love in Downtown Memphis? The atmosphere, the smell of BBQ , the lights, sounds, and the romance. It's also where my husband and I met. We will be married three years the 24 of Feburary.
Crystal
The South Main history - Ernestine & Hazel's, the Amtrak station,... - mixed with an up and coming art scene.
Peter
It is small enough to be easily assessible, but there is always something new to discover.
Susanne
Downtown Memphis is a great place to live and to visit. In comparing it to other downtown areas, its compact yet its span in history and culture is great. Just taking the trolley loop ride one can see so much history, change and renovation, and still much more is to come. Way to go Downtown Memphis, we love you.
Gary
Downtown Memphis has soul! By soul, I mean a connectedness with people of difference backgrounds in an urban environment. The businesses have soul: restaurants all come with a personal touch and not a chain-like atmosphere, the bars always have live music and a party, and the shops all have unique items only found downtown. As a result of this atmosphere, we had our wedding downtown. Our guests loved it and the amazing pictures around downtown (outsite E&H, inside the train station and the peabody) show it!
katie
Downtown Memphis is so diverse. There is definately something for everyone to do down there.
Katie
We just moved here from out of state. We make weekly trips downtown. We have met so many wonderful people and done many wonderful things. We have a child at Downtown Elementary and find so many fun family things to do. My absolute favorite?? Walking downtown to eat and shop, then taking the Trolley home!!! I have riden the Trolley too many times to count and it never stops being fun. There is just something about the Trolley that gives Memphis that extra character. I have never enjoyed city-living as much as I have here. We'll be long time residents for sure!!! Because we are new, every walk downtown provides us with a new experiance and new favorites!!! Every Trolley ride home, reveals new ideas for the next time!
Emily
Over the past couple years, downtown Memphis has become my FAVORITE part of Memphis! There are so many activities and local attracations to chose from; whether you are interested in great local restaurants, shops, museums, art, or entertainment, you can find something that suits your mood on any given day. I particularly enjoy how walkable downtown is - I love being able to go from a riverside walk to a concert at the Orpheum to dinner and drinks afterwards without ever stepping foot in a car.
Melissa
I love the sights, the sounds, the feeling of downtown. It is like no other city I have been to. It always has great things going on and people, places and things added on a regular basis. I love it as it is now and for what it was and can be for the future of our city!
Lindsey
I love downtown. It is the past, present, and future of Memphis. I remember going downtown with my mother to shop, or to see the Enchanted Forest. Many times I went downtown to go to Mud Island and see a concert or to attend the fireworks at the river. Today, downtown has someting for everyone. Whether you enjoy fine dining, or something quick, downtown has many resturants. Sporting events, the Orpheum Theater, and music venues offer a variety of options for entertainment. Families can enjoy the Peabody ducks, the trolley, and the fountains. With the new developments and restoration of the old buildings, downtown will move into the future. It is a fun place to be!
Cindy
I love that there are so many things to do in Downtown Memphis. Last month, we went to a Rock and Romp Concert at the former Jay Etkin Gallery, the Holiday Parade on South Main, dinner at Spindini, and then the Tiger Game at the Forum. Wow! All that in one day in one square mile!
Cynthia
I love being able to park the car and walk everywhere I want to go downtown. Walking hand-in-hand is so much more romantic than a long drive.
Sarah
Downtown Memphis has everything to offer. It houses amazing food, live entertainment, and plenty of attractions. It's an awesome place to live. Absolutely love the downtown vibe.
Brian
What is there not to love? Among the several things,I love the history of the city. You can feel it in the air. When you walk into BB Kings you can feel the spirit of the many preformers who played their hearts out on stage.
The old store fronts, the feel of cobblestone beneath your feet. The king of Rock and Roll. If you were never an Elvis fan, you will be by the time you leave. His music gets to your soul as you stroll through the rooms of "Graceland".
The food also has to be one of my favorites. From the down-homecooking to the fine dining, it fits the needs of everyone.
The streets of downtown are the most beautiful of any city I have seen. The sounds of the trolley, the click of hooves from the horse drawn carriages and waves of the Mississippi River drown out the sounds of the everyday city life.
The beauty of this city has made it my favorite. I love Memphis.
Dana
Downtown presents the soul and identity of Memphis. From the legendary rock and birthplace of the blues to the tasty pork BBQ, downtown is the place to be. We enjoy the sporting events and entertainment at AutoZone Park and FedEx Forum. Walks along historic Beale Street and late nights at different clubs have always been a favorite. The Peabody Hotel has always been a beautiful site to embrace the eloquent heritage and history of Memphis. The best BBQ food and ambiance can be found at Charlie Vergos Rendezvous. For a night with family and friends it is hard to beat downtown Memphis.
Brian
I love Downtown Memphis because you come to feel alive! What happens downtown, stays downtown!
Jessica
Me and my sweetheart have shared some great times in Downtown Memphis. One in particular was a few years ago, my honey surprised me with tickets to a Grizzles game and then a surprise birthday party at the Wyndham. It was so special. Another was a special evening at the Isacc Hayes restaurant. We really liked the atmosphere there and the food was excellent too. Hate that it closed down. We like hanging out of Beale Street. We always enjoy the entertainment and B.B. King's is one of our favorite restaurants on the strip. We like the zoo, museums and just hanging out as long as we are together.
Jackie
Its great being able to walk to all sorts of restaurants/bars to suit the atmosphere/crowd that I'm looking for. Downtown has plenty to do but still maintains a small town feel.
Dave
"It's just that everything is so close, all in one package. Its better than New Orleans." These are the words of a person from faraway riding the trolley loop and explaining what they liked about Downtown Memphis. And yes, she is correct. That's why as a local Memphian, I return to Downtown so often for so many unique activities. These include the sunsets, the music, the walkable parks along the Mississippi, the sports arenas, museums, farmers' markets, galleries and each new or renovated restaurant. And now a university law school and art college will bring on a another sense of community Downtown. Its so easy to sense that Downtown Memphis is a very special place to visit or live. I wonder, has the song "I left my heart in Downtown Memphis" been written yet?
Gerald
Downtown Memphis is great! I have many memories from being a child and going to Goldsmith's shopping with my mom and especially going to the Enchanted Forest every year at Christmas time. I started working right out of highschool at the Peabody Hotel and currently 18 years later am still employed in the great Downtown area. Downtown has been through many changes in the past 18 years and I have seen alot of that right from my window at work. Such an amazing place filled with great people. I am glad I get to visit Downtown everyday and be apart of the great change that is taking place.
Christy
I love the networking, shopping, drinking, and the southern blues on Beale. And I love watching those grizzles Great family atmosphere. Love riding the trolley with my family. Downtown has plent of historical sites love learnig the history and events of downtownmemphis

There are so many things i love about downtown Memphis. I remember as a child going downtown to watch the huge christmas parades that the city would put on. I also remember going downtown to the basement of Goldsmith and waiting in line to see Santa Claus when we went to the original Enchanted Forest. While so many of these things have changed the thing i love the most is about downtown is the history of downtown that never goes away. While new things will come and go the history is always there of things that happened long ago. The history of the river is just amazing to me and I love to watch the PBS specials about downtown many years ago. It always makes me feel good when i walk downtown knowing that I am walking on cobblestones that horse drawn carriages of long ago or model-t cars drove on. We have such a rich history and it is growing all the time.
Lisa
I love the flying saucer and beale st!!! there is also a tremendous number of world famous authentic restaurants that are amazing. fed ex forum is right off beale street. lastly, music. its impossible not to hear music rolling into the street from numerous bars.
Derek
I love the fact that nothing makes it better to be a memphian than to spend some time downtown. The city and it's people really shine when they come together down by the river. Long live Memphis...
Dennis
I love downtown Memphis because of the atmosphere. There is so much to see and do . Once your car is parked you can walk to so many different places and see so many interesting things . There is magnificent day and night life. I love it !!! All of the lights look great at night . Another feature that is great downtown is the River,,it looks beautiful day or night as well . I love the restaurants , and the venues . Everything from Fed -Ex forum , to BB Kings to the Orpheum they are all within walking distance from another which makes a great outing for a couple or a family . I love Downtown!!!!
Angela
Love everything about downtown, love the old feel of downtown, The Peabody, Beale Street, the feel of blues music, and the lights. Love, love, love the FOOD. I love the parties on the Rooftop. Love goin to Redbirds and Grizzlies games with my kids and husband. Have had some of the best memories in Downtown Memphis. And to think it all started when my husband and i got engaged in one of the horse drawn carriages that are famous in downtown.
Tabitha
Downtown Memphis represents the best mixture of southern charm and city atmosphere. I love that Downtown Memphis is a place that offers family-friendly activities and romantic outings to rekindle the love between couples. But what I love MOST about Downtown Memphis is all the memories that my husband and I have shared there through the years.
Arby
Downtown Memphis is a place to eat, a place to drink, a place to dance, a place to visit, a place to socialize, a place to sing Take Me Out the Ballgame during the 7th inning stretch, a place to walk, a place to BBQ, a place to remember, a place to eat a late night Soul Burger and a place to see the arts.
Just a few reasons why I love Memphis
Mallory
I love the Downtown people!!! We are "part-time" Memphians, rolling in to town every four weeks or so. It all started with us signing up for the annual St. Jude's Childrens Hospital Marathon weekend many years ago and has taken off from there (which by the way, is the first Saturday in December -- become a Hero!). Although not "regulars" in town, there's nothing like walking in to a place and being recognized with friendly "hello's"!!! Also, we always stop off somewhere on the way back from a night out to get something to eat and no matter how long it has been, the bartender/waiter/waitress will always remember our favorites, how we like it cooked, and certain accompaniments that are "special order" (i.e. sweet potato fries). It is a WONDERFUL downtown core!!!!!!!!!
MaryPat
I love Downtown Memphis for Beale St,FedEx Forum, Peabody & Madison Hotels and all of the great restaurants and I can't forget the River and Redbirds Stadium. I love everything from watching the Grizzlies to Musicals at the Orpheum and an occasional concert at Mud Island. After all of that you can dance the night away at Rum Boogie. Whether you grab a trolley or a carriage ride there is always something to do.
Linda
Riding bikes down by the river...especially if the weather is pretty.
Anna
During my Number 10 days as a single girl just out of school, I found friends, love, and a hell of a good time! I met my husband of 5 years on Beale while out with friends one night, and there we discovered we were neighbors. We lived in the same building and did not know one another. We've been together ever since, and in fact, got married downtown on the island. We were the first couple to marry on Mud Island in the River Park. We married in Sept. 2004 and continued to live downtown for several more months before moving to Midtown to start a family. We try to get down there often to hang out with friends and eat at our favorite restaurants. But, it's just not the same! I wouldn't trade my family life, but I sure do miss those downtown days (and nights)!
Amanda
I am not the emotional or 'romantic' type, but Downtown Memphis has has a very special place in my heart. One of my two boys were born downtown and I married the most special person there 27 years ago. And The Daisy was the place to be back in the day...
Calvin
New restaurants and the new opportunities to live down
town
Jonathan
The fact that everything is within walking distance and on rainy days, the trolley is always available. Unlike some other big cities, people are friendly and often smile as you pass.
Cameron
I love watching the sun set on the river from the rooftops downtown. So beautiful!
Amy
I love the baseball field. Very few communities have major league facilities which promote fun the way that Memphis' minor league ball field does. BBQ nachos, microbrews, and lots of crowd participation. It's perfect.
Kirk
When I decided to return to Memphis a few years ago, I knew that I wanted to live Downtown. In fact, I never thought twice about where I wanted to be. Downtown was my first experience of Memphis when I moved here initially in the late '80s. I was in a club on Beale within weeks of my arrival and soon after was working Downtown in my first grown-up job. Now there are museums galore, music, theatre, galleries and much more. And really, that glorious river and the sun setting just beyond every day? Fantastic!
Virginia
Window Shopping and Happy Hour regardless of the Weather!
Ruchee
A downtown is the heart and history of our community. So it is with Downtown Memphis. The streets are full of the rich history that is Memphis. From the ripples of the River to the rhythmns of the music, Downtown is Memphis. Cool...cultural...alive!
Deb
Going downtown is like taking a mini vacation. Great music, food, theater, entertainment, and sporting events that are second to none. It is the crown jewel of Memphis.
Elizabeth
I love the sounds and sights that make Memphis unique
Elise
I love the downtown dining opportunities. They are world-class!
Susan
I LOVE the sense of community I get from walking my dog on the Mud Island Greenbelt Park, surrounded by people of all ages, races, and professions.
I LOVE Downtown's food. In just a few blocks, you can grab a deli sandwich, Italian, barbecue, fried chicken, crepes, a steak, Sunday brunch, date night dinner, and so much more, all run by locals who love our city.
I LOVE Downtown's happy hour spots, the FedEx Forum and Orpheum, and the beautifully restored downtown law school.
Stephanie
it's all about the music! i love listening to some blues at bb kings with a glass of wine in hand.
andrea
I love everything about downtown! My favorite part about living downtown is how I can walk to my favorite restaurants and eat fresh and local foods!
Melissa
There are so many things I love about Downtown Memphis. This time of year I love eating at any of the wonderful restaurants Downtown and then heading to the FedEx Forum to cheer on the Tigers. I also love going to the Orpheum to see any of the Broadway shows. When the weather is warmer, I love Redbirds games, S. Main trolley tours, the Farmer’s Market and jogging along the MS River.
Angela
everything, so many good restaurants and other places to go see. theres always some fun happening there ,whether its in a bar , the forum , the daisy ,or just around beale street. I love taking my kids dowm there , they love the trolley and all the lights and people around beale street. its alot more family friendly than some people give it credit for. I encourage everyone to take the kids and take a stroll around downtown(when the weather is a little nicer) go down to beale street, main street, front streetand make sure you take the time to take a break in the Peabody hotel for a while..Even if you think you know everything about downtown you will always find something new and exciting.
richard
I love how downtown makes me feel. It makes me dress a little nicer. It makes me feel like the night is a little more important. The food smells better and the beer tastes colder. If midtown is Memphis, then downtown is vacation.
Chris
everything! the food, the music, the neighborhoods, the convenience of having all kinds of venues within a few foot steps!
sandy
There is truly something for everyone, from the first time tourist to the cost-conscious, young adult.
Fran
The restaurants, the Grizzlies & Redbirds, the history, but most of all the people!
Darrin
I love that downtown memphis has a romantic feel. You can get there easily for a impromtu night out with easy parking and everything is very convienent. You can go to a ball game, eat fabulous barbque, or stroll the farmers market on a Sat morning.
Lisa
I love the fact that I am always in the know. I know about the events, the festivals, the restaurant specials and the show openings. I know that living downtown was a great decision, and I know I am making a difference.
Kaitlin
The history of all the old buildings, the music, the trolley rides by the river, the carefree energy of everyone enjoying themselves.
Deirdre
I love everything about downtown: history, food, people, views of the river, trolley, carriage rides, Beale Street, cobblestone streets...EVERYTHING!!
Marcie
Downtown Memphis is a special place for me and my husband. We were married in Memphis last July. We spent our honeymoon Downtown. Walking down Beale Street is what I love most about it. I love the feeling of the history the downtown area brings. The atmosphere and cuisine is indescribable. We absolutley love it! Can't wait to go back!
Teresa
Getting out with friends! Being a local who loves to introduce new people to our favorite spots downtown!
Bowen
I love Downtown Memphis (and Memphis in general) for it's history (please, name one other city in the world that has the musical heritage - country, blues, rock n roll - that Memphis can claim!) But, even more than that, there's an energy here that pulses with creativity - in the business people who work here, the kids, the events, the architecture, everything.
Ann
I love that I see something new every day. A new restaurant or retail store coming soon. A new neighbor. New Urban artwork. New show coming to The Orpheum. New concert at FedExForum. Downtown Memphis is perpetually changing and I'm glad to be a part of it.
Carly
Great food, great fun, great music, great people, great history... EVERYTHING IS GREAT
Charise
Standing on the roof of the Peabody and looking out over the river. It's really a magnificent view.
Brad
Downtown Memphis is gratifying- you leave every time a little more in love with the city than the last time you were there. What I love most about downtown is the way it gives a new twist on our old favorites. New restaurants, signature cuisine. New bars, classic rock ‘n’ roll. New River Walk, same great view of the Mississippi. Downtown is ever-changing and there’s always something to love!
Leslie
I love the variety of people that you see when walking down main street. People of all races, ethnicities, ages, backgrounds, etc.
Angela
The food, fun, history, and entertainment. A place of choice for weekend trips :)
Kim
Downtown is so much fun. I have so many memories of downtown. WHen my husband and I first got married 36 years ago it was one of our favorite places. My first job was downtown in the NBC one commerce square building. We still go downtown to Spaghetti Warehouse and then hop on the trolley with our children and grandchildren. Memphis in May,events are the best. We go to Beale street when we have friends come in from out of town. Downtown has it all for any age group
Linda
Everything! It is so beautiful. I feel like I'm living the life of the rich and the famous when I'm walking around Down Town Memphis.
Russell
I love the energy, the people and the great food selections! Memphis has a southern feel but when stepping into downtown you get to experience many cultures. The music the cuisine and atmosphere are all intoxicating.
nicole
I love Riverside Drive at night in the summer. Its a very romantic spot. The bridge gives off the perfect amount of light that relects off the Mississipi River. LOVE IT!!!!
Nicole
I am new to the area and I love that ther are so many cool music places to go to all close together.
Leslie
I love the vast array of delicious food, rockin' music, and cultures that comprise Downtown Memphis.
Eric
The history that starts downtown and continues through the rest of the city, the invaluable culture, the local businesses that are almost a secret to Memphians, and the larger business that serve as a "must see/tryout" destination for visitors. Over all though, it's the people in the downtown area that make it such a wonderful place to live or visit. Southern Hospitality mixed with culture is an experience in itself that can not be found in other cities.
Shelly
Well I have not exactly been to Memphis but we are planning to go
the 11th of Feb. and stay thru the 15th.
We are excited about going and seeing all the attractions, music and food! It would be so romantic and great to win this for Valentines Day while we are there.
We have talked about going for awhile now and I am very excited about our trip! Winning this would just be the best trip ever expecially on that special day with my sweetie!
carlyle
I love the exciting vibe of downtown. The endless dining options before a broadway show at the world-class Orpheum Theater, the Center for Southern Folklore's music blaring down Main Street as trolleys pass by, and the amazing view of the Mississippi River and bridge as you're coming down Riverside Drive are just a few of my favorite things about downtown. I also love the excitement of Beale Street after a great Grizzlies or Tigers win at the Forum and the fun of hanging out on South Main during the Trolley Tour. There's so much to love about downtown, it's hard to name just one thing!
Apryl
I love Memphis because it doesn't feel like a big city, although it has all the food and entertainment you would expect in a metropolis. Memphis irradiates a friendly atmosphere, having lived in Memphis only for a year now, it really feels like home, although there is plenty of adventure left to explore: viewing or playing sports, strolling around and watching Memphis natives and tourists mingle, I love it all!
Karen
The Downtown Memphis area has an atmosphere like no other. To walk the same streets that BB King and other famous musicians have graced is an honor all by itself. No matter where you are, the music is always playing. The restaurants, the friendly faces, the authentic stores coupled with the history of Memphis is phenomenal!
LaQuetta
I LOVE the FOOD and Atmosphere!! I moved from Knoxville to Memphis to be with my Girlfriend and we spend most of our date nights downtown..Knox does not have all the cool and great places to enjoy, like Memphis. She always shows me something new or interesting~its a great place to create memories!
Matthew
I Love the fact that the city has created a more elegant and artsy atmosphere~ I love the FOOD and Beale Street music!
Candice
The entertainment Downtown is the best in the South. For unforgettable moments with your Honey or the family, it can happen Downtown. I call it "Little New York" because there is so much to do year-around such as festivals, celebrations, sports, music entertainment, arts, plays, historic sites and more. The restaurants are GREAT! The river view and sunset are priceless. I love Riverside Park especially in the spring when the kites are flying. Downtown is becoming more and more family friendly especially due to the parks and events at our fabulous sports and entertainment arenas. The workers downtown are warm and friendly. The residents are a delightful "breed". I think it's the bright lights and fresh air. I LOVE DOWNTOWN!!!
Deborah
I love the downtown Memphis atmosphere, the big city feel, without the big city hassle. Downtown Memphis is the perfect size, not too big or small, any destination is reachable from anywhere in the city within minutes. My wife and I often spend an entire day enjoying all that downtown has to offer, although we've lived here our entire lives, we come across something new on every visit. The countless number of retail shops offer an incredibly diverse selection of items from all over the world, restaurants serving everything from Memphis' world famous barbeque to fine indian quisine. Tony award winning plays at the historical Orpheum Theatre, spending an evening under the stars with the boys of summer at the beautiful RedBird Stadium, or being wowed by the Grizzlies at the incredible FedEx Forum, which opens up to the lengendary Beale Street. Where else in the country can you enjoy a family night out and take a walk through history at the same time? Only in the great city of Memphis, and that's what I love about downtown!
Adrian
I am 38 years old and fell in love with downtown Memphis when I was 16 years old. My dad worked at the VA Hospital and I would drive downtown to meet him for lunch sometimes. The energy downtown always left me wanting to return. 3 years ago I decided to move to the Claridge House so I could be in the center of all the excitement and energy. It is wonderful to be surrounded by so many wonderful restaurants and places with great music. We enjoy being able to walk to AutoZone Park, Fedex Forum and Beale Street. Even when the weather is less than perfect we have the convenience of the trolley. There is nowhere else in the city my heart longs to be than Downtown Memphis!!!
Pam
I love the lights, music, great food but most of all the smiling happy faces all around!!
Craig
Downtown Memphis is all about having fun!
christi
I love that there is always something great to see at all the art galleries, great merchandise at the clothing stores (LOVE Coco & Lilies)and always fantastic places to eat and listen to great Memphis music!
Carol
The lights, the food, the music but most of all the romance!!!
linda
I love the romance of the jazz music.
Kelly
I love everything about it, especially the atmosphere!
Katie
The lobby of the Peabody Hotel when it's packed with tourists.
Jeff
I love that downtown provides us with a vibrant, fun city atmosphere and right outside the "city door" is access to the MS river providing a quick escape to water and outdoor parks and activities. Plus, where else in Memphis does music, art, theater, sporting events, and more merge!
Leanne
I love the magnificent views of the Mississippi river and I love driving over the A.W. Willis bridge to Harbor Town. As soon as you get to the other side your breathing slows down and you feel like you are on vacation! It is my dream to one day buy a home on the island and spend the rest of my life in a "cottage by the sea . . ."
Elena
Memphis is one of the best cities in America! There are so many things to do; whether it be the Peabody, Beale Street, one of the hundreds of incredible BBQ joints, or the Memphis Redbirds, there is always something fun to do. I love the ability to leave a modern district like Mud Island and be in the heart of historical downtown in no time at all. It is a great mix for people in all walks of life
Daniel
What do I love about Downtown Memphis? Where do I start? How about the river. It is a majestic sight and one I'm lucky enough to see every day. We have the most beautiful sunsets in Memphis and watching them on the Mississippi River is such a treat. Or how about the beautiful Orpheum Theatre? How exciting to get dressed up for a show, or have a casual night at the movies in the summer. The FedEx Forum and the Canon Center are world-class. Great restaurants, great music, great feel, exciting new things are happening all the time. Even my 9 year old daughter will ask, 'can't we go downtown?' when considering things to do with guests or when we have free time. I love Memphis, it is my home, and Downtown Memphis is where I love to be most!
Leslie
History and the Here and Now - a peek into the past of difficult times gone by, architecture depicting an era ended, and monuments to keep the memories alive. This contrasts with the present day - a skyline representing great unity, energy, and enjoyment.
Sandy
I love the feeling you get when you're downtown..eating,dancing,watching fireworks,or riding the trolley..I've loved going downtown all my life & have many many great memories of fun exciting times downtown. One of my favorite memories was skating down Main St. in the Christmas Parade with SIVAD as a very special guest. Another great memory is filming a Guitar Wolf video on Main@Madison with the great Memphis director,John Michael McCarthy..what great fun that was & the resulting video is here..

I love everything about downtown. I love the feel of all of restaurants, shops, hotels etc. People who live downtown and go downtown have a unique spirit and love for Memphis. Mid-towner and downtowners’ love Memphis and see the positive of this great historical city. I live in midtown and 5 minutes from downtown and travel to downtown on the regular weekly. I work in the suburbs and the highlight of my day is to return back to the 104. I have stayed at the Madison several times and can not wait to win this night out for me and my wife.
Carl
I live out east however I never hesitate at the chance to go downtown and just hang out and explore. It's always a thrill to me as I can see the Memphis Bridge in the skyline as I'm approaching the city. As I leisurely drive around the city, I always try to roll my windows down so I can take in the sounds and sights of the city....especialy on Beale and South Main. Both are favorites of mine as well as my teenage sons. There is something about the historic culture and the musical talent that lures us back time and time again. I also play around with my camera and there's no place better than a Saturday or Sunday afternoon to take some great shots of the city, the river and the people as they all interact with each other. I'm originally from up north but have lived in Memphis for over 20 years now. I call this home now and I'm proud of it.
Julie
The food, the hotel's, the carriage rides, the peabody, Beale street, the view of the river. I never get to go because I live in Cordova and its hard for me to have a glass or two of wine and drive home. I did live downtown at one time, and would love to move back... I hope I win...
Katie
Katie
I love Downtown Memphis because it gives me and my wife a sense of excitement in our lives every time we go there. I was born and raised in Memphis and Downtown holds a special place in my heart. My most special place in the world is sitting in the lobby of the Peabody with a cup of coffee and watching the hustle and bustle of that great hotel. My wife and I also love to go to the Majestic on Fridays for the best clam chowder in the world. I love Downtown Memphis!
Danny
I love the energy of the downtown Memphis, a vacation waiting to happen just across the magnificient M bridge. We especially enjoy the Farmer's Market every Saturday morning in season...worth getting up early for. And don't even get me started on Itta Benna!
Linda
I love the music and the TIGERS!!!!
Danita
History...Culture...Diversity...- What more could you want in a downtown? Memphis has something for everyone from food, tours to entertainment. The buildings alone are a reason alone to love downtown. The history is rooted so deep that everywhere you go you can feel the long line of events that have taken place here.
And to top it off the people all have the hospiatlity of a small town.
It's wonderful!!
Tanya
There is nothing like crossing over the Harbor Town bridge...enjoying the river and leaving all your cares behind...oh and the local downtown restaurants...and the Farmer's Market...
Brooke
I love the beautiful architecture of the downtown buildings on Main Street. From Poplar all the way down to GE Patterson, there are so many different styles. The lovely iron work at the trolley station on the Mall, the ornate gazebo on Court Street, and the stunning designs at Madison & Main. When I walk (or trolley) down Main Street I marvel at the simple beauty of these old buildings.
Kimberly
My favorite thing that I love about Downtown Memphis is to take long walks with my husband. We love to walk down Main Street and stop into the little shops and art galleries to see what is new. It is also a great time to watch people.
rebecca
Downtown won my heart the moment I moved here in 2006. From that moment I've never looked back and never once regretted my decision to move to Memphis. Downtown Memphis provides the foundation for my Memphis Motto "good times, good food, good people doing good things." The atmosphere of Downtown is so friendly and so welcoming to newbies. The creative spirit and willingness to thrive is what I love most and find so appealing about downtown. The willingness to overcome the past and to build anew - that is Memphis, full of heart and soul, real stories about real people.
Jenifer
I love living Downtown!. The company where I work at relocated me a year ago and I would not change it. I spend must of my lunches in the downtown area and spend must of my free time in all the entertainment that is available. Downtown Memphis offers a relaxed, traditional but sofisticated atmosphere where you can hang with friends and have great time.
Walking down Beale, having barbecue, riding the trolley, going to watch a Grizzlies or Memphis Tigers game at the FedEx Forum or the Red Birds at the Autozone gives you enough through all year. Additionally watching a Broadway play at the Orpheum Theater and just walking or exercising at front street or in Mud Island areas gives your life in the Downtown area all the requirements to make it a great place to visit.
I love to spending sometime at the museums so you can even go to the Civil Rights museum ,the Cotton museum or even the Mud Island Park museum which they are all great. I still need to visit the Fire museum which I already receive good feedback as a good place to go.
Downtown area has everything that you could require to make your life full of entertainment. Downtown is an area where I have been able to find great new friends and make my life more enjoyable.
Javier
I love seeing the amazing breadth of entertainment options ... all in one handy web portal. It's great for me to plan my weekends ... and to share with my co-workers so that they can plan theirs.
Cara
The music, the food, the culture. What is not to love???
N.
I love downtown Memphis because I was raised in a very small town, a town with three red lights and we turned two of them off in the winter! Everyone knew their neighbors and kept an eye out for each other. Downtowners are just like that. Every time I walk out the door of my building to go to lunch, I walk the trolley line and see five or more people I know, and they greet me by name. Downtown feels like a small home town with it's own vibe, within the borders of a big town, Memphis. I love Beale Street and the blues, and any time I have out of town guests, we always come downtown!
Kelli
What I love about Downtown Memphis, what can you not love ,the walk on the cobblestone, lights, and seeing people embrace each other while they walk or eating on the patio at one of Downtown's finest restaurants, and let's talk about the Riverfront, my husband and I live for the Riverfront, just embracing each other or walking gazing at the Magnificient Sunset , Oh my!!! You have to be there to feel what we feel, and finally ,The Madison Hotel {rooftop} that's one of our secret spots !!!
Tootles!!!
SARAH
I love seeing the trolleys run through downtown!!
Jennifer
My husband and I had our first date downtown. We saw a show at The Orpheum and then went for a horse and carriage ride in downtown Memphis during Memphis in May on a beautiful spring night. Now we take our kids downtown and show them how lucky they are to live in a city where we met and the home of blues and rock and roll. (O Don't forget the RIBS!)
Paula
All the great places to eat dessert and hear live music! The Center for Southern Folklore is a great place to experience what living in the south looks like now and then!
Lindsey
I love the sweet smell of BBQ during BBQ fest!
Cedric
Downtown is the perfect respite from our home in suburban Collierville. The vibe in the air in downtown Memphis is like no other. I was recently downtown for jury duty and had plenty of time to spend outside the courthouse, looking at the buildings, the architecture, talking to the people walking by. It is truly a great city with wonderful people. From the courthouse to main street, with its nightlife, music, food and festivities, it is a fun place to be.
Rebecca
I love sitting in Rum Boogie or BB King's listening to the sound of Memphis Music. It's the heart and soul of the city.
Ben
I love the views of Downtown Memphis. I love that when walking down any street there is a lovely view to take in and enjoy!
Courtney
I love that I can escape from the life of east memphis just a few miles west. Downtown makes me love memphis. The theatre, the resturants, the shops, beale st. & the history make you feel like you're apart of something special when you're in downtown memphis.
Shanette
I love Downtown Memphis because it is where my Sweetie and I went for our first date. We met online and I live in Missouri and he lives in Illinois, we love blues music so we went to Memphis. We had a wonderful dinner, listened to some great music and took a carriage ride. It was the best date ever and Downtown Memephis will always have a special place in our hearts!
Shannon
great place to come and enjoy so many things food night life and much more
Danny
All of the great restaurants.
Jason
I love the musical culture and unique style of art!!
sophia
Where else can you experience such culture? Only Downtown. I love the backstreet blues of Beale and the explosive entertainment of the Fedex Forum. But who could forget the moving productions of the Orpheum (Wicked was my favorite) and the timeless works played so beautifully by our own Memphis Symphony at the Cannon Center. However, it is not just the fine arts...it's the food. Downtown Memphis is the place to go for anything special. It is where memories are made. A lovely dinner at one of Downtown's finest, Texas de Brazil, and then to the riverfront for Fourth of July fireworks or the Sunset Symphony. The possibilities are endless with Downtown Memphis.
Caleb
I think that Downtown Memphis is a jewel and a true centerpiece of the city. It has big city cultural diversity and yet still retains quaint smaller city warmth. Everytime I am downtown I feel more alive and energetic. Downtown has so many choices in things to do and places to dine no matter what I am in the mood for there are good restaurants to choose from and many activities to try. Downtown is about choices that has something for everyone and anytime.
Della
I LOVE DOWNTOWN...From the moment I arrive downtown, its like a breath of fresh air. From the lights to the tall building and great food, I feel like I can escape the "CITY." I am always facinated by the warmth of the people downtown. I have never went into a club, bar, or restaurant where the mood is as enticing as downtown. When you are downtown, people are more relaxed. Not worried about jobs, bank accounts, or kids; people are just trying to have a good time. Thats why I love downtown. I love being about to get away from work and graduate school and just enjoy the vibe; the sights and the smells. So for valentines day, its only perfect to be downtown, the location that I love, with the person I love!
Olivia
I enjoy everything about downtown Memphis! The shows at the Orpheum, dining out, walking up and down Beale Street. Although we don't go downtown alot, every time we go we have a wonderful time!!
Ronda
i love the entertainment and atmosphere, im from a small town so i like to get away from time to time and go to downtown memphis. there is always something to do. the old architecture is awesome i love looking at the buildings, downtown is just beautiful.
sarah
I love downtown Memphis! It is the heart of the City where we come together to cheer on the Tigers at FedEx Forum, ride the trolley, watch the river go by and relax. I love Memphis in May, going to concerts downtown and eating at many of our favorite resturants. I have a lot of fond memories of downtown including the first kiss with my wife on the river bluff 20 years ago!
John
I love walking down Main St and watching people. I love the Main St. art district and trolley tours. I love going to the top of the peabody and seeing the ducks and the view of the city. My husband and I took our engagement pictures on top of the peabody. I love that we can always park at Parking Can Be Fun for cheap and be close to everywhere we want to be. We love the variety of restaurants downtown. We've enjoyed taking a ride on the trolley and hearing about Memphis history from the driver.
Heidi
I love the energy that downtown Memphis has right now! There is so much happing: the new law school, Memphis Grizzlies and all of the great events happening downtown! I have lived here for 3 years and I have never seen this much buzz, wonderful new bars and resaturants are opening weekly! It is so clean, friendly and safe which is why I am proud to live in DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS!
Jessica
I love the "big city" lights at night. The food and fun the city provides beats all other big cities I have visited. The music that was born in memphis lives 365 days a year. The city offers several cultural events to the people for learning, enrichment and fun.
Amy
It has been several years since we have been there. We loved the time we drove through and found a great little music store downtown. There were stairs in the back that went up to a cute little mall! Awesome arrangement! I would love to go back and beebop around and explore it more thoroughly. A friend told us of a great time they had there at a concert on Mud Island.
Brenda
What I love about downtown Memphis is there is so many things to do within walking distance. You can catch a baseball game, have dinner and shop all in one day.
chastity
Walking on Beale St,the different people, the music & I love seeing the horses. The cobble stones on Riverside Drive. WHAT'S NOT TO LOVE ABOUT DOWNDOWN MEMPHIS? IT's GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!

I love downtown Memphis. I love all the historic building and the history in general that this area of Memphis holds. There's plenty of fun and entertainment to be had in downtown Memphis. Whether I'm looking for just a night out with the girls or a romantic weekend with my husband, downtown Memphis is the place to be.
Jennifer
I love visiting downtown and taking in a show at the Orpheum.
Heather
There is so much to love about Downtown Memphis. Where to begin? First of all, I live downtown and it has such a great sense of community. It seems like everyone knows eachother and looks out for one another. You can't find that everywhere. It's so nice to be where the action is too. You have so many choices for great places to dine and find entertainment. It's so nice to walk down the street and watch the trolley and horse-drawn carriages go by. Anyways, what's not to love about Downtown Memphis!
Audrey
The atmosphere is graet and the different variety of music, food and entertainment make downtown my favorite destination in memphis.
Shelton
I love the Orpheum, Beale Street and The Peabody! Downtown Memphis is awesome!
tammie
Living in Oxford, MS, Memphis is the closest big city and Downtown Memphis is the perfect weekend getaway. Drive up Friday night for dinner and dancing, stay at a nice hotel, then spend Saturday shopping or at the spa! And its only an hour from home!
Lindsey
The magnificent river is the constant background for art, music, greatfood, and america,s favorite pastime baseball. The sunset tonight was beautiful while a barge passed by the last remains of the sun streamed through the clouds. (He view from the top of the @eabody or the top of the Madison can't be beat.
Deborah
Everything. Big city attractions with a small town vibe. Houses everything from fun to culture and amazing food. Love it.
Katie
The best place for a young professional to live. Convenient, fun, and so many people to meet.
Peter
I live downtown Memphis! I like the variety of activities that you can enjoy within a short walking distance. You can enjoy a concert or a basketball game at FedEx Forum, food and drinks on Beale Street, a show at the Orpheum, dinner at the many fantastic resteraunts downtown, and a romantica carriage ride along the river bluff. I also enjoy all of the recent development of downtown core. It is really great to see such progress being made on such an important part of our city.
John
To me, downtown symbolizes home. I remember being a child and coming across the bridge on our way home from a trip and as I saw the downtown skyline, my heart was warmed because I was home.
Teresa
I actually use to work downtown @ Fielder Square apartments. I loved being so close to everything, all the hottest entertainment! You could literally walk anywhere. Taking a stroll by the river or shopping at the Peabody! I love beale Street! All the hottest clubs! Downtown memphis is Awesome!
Madelyn
What I Love about downtown is the way the city appears in both daylight and night. In the daytime it like she's all buisness everyone going somewhere to a meeting, to court, to buisness lunches and at night its so realaxed nobody hurring to get somewhere just hanging out. The buildings even seem to change
its like your in a diffrent land with all the lights and diffrent people from around the world. We live in Desoto co. and we visit at least 4 to 5 times a year for dinner, or go to the orpheum and its like we went on a small vacation and we have the best of times.
LaDonna
What is there not to love about downtown Memphis. You have everything imaginable in just a step and stone away from one another. Great food, great music, great atmosphere. What more is there to say about the home of Rock and Roll.
chris
I love Downtown Memphis! It is very convenient. Walgreens in walking distance, so many choices on where you can eat. And the exercise you receive from being able to walk around to different places is definitely a plus.
Regina
What do I love about Downtown Memphis? I love Court Square and the Trolley. This area makes you feel like you are in an area that is truly meant for all people activity i.e., eating, walking, working, riding public transit, or relaxing. I also love South Main, it provides for boutique shopping outside of the traditional mall setting.
tiena
I love the parks directly on the Mississppi River. It's a perfect walk for my dog Layla and myself, with a beautiful view.
Darlene
The nightlife! Great new spots to eat and drink (Bardog, South of Beale, and Local) Beale street (Music at Blues City and Divers at Silkys) and of course late dancing at Raifords.
Christopher
From the elegant finery on the rooftop of the South's finest hotel to the vibrant buzz of electricity emanating from Beale Steet, downtown provides everything I have ever needed for a memorable evening. The nostalgia of my first date with my future wife, ambling along the cobblestones by the river on a crisp springtime twilight will ever be etched in my memory. As will leaving the Rendevous with my boys and scurrying to get to the Fed-Ex forum in time for the tip-off of the Memphis Grizzlies. This is what makes downtown Memphis special. This is why I love adding to my adventures downtown.
Scott
i enjoy taking my wife out for a nice dinner and dancing @ one of the many clubs on beale
jay
I love Main Street. It is very quaint and beautiful to walk down and ride the trolley down. Main Street offers many wonderful restaurants and eclectic shops that are different from anywhere else in Memphis.
Kelly
everything... the great vibe, interesting cultural events, exciting festivals,
Corbett
I love the atmosphere of Downtown Memphis. There is so much to do Downtown, that you could actully take a vacation in your own hometown. There is truly something for everyone in Downtown Memphis. Whether it's a romantic evening, a history lesson for your kids, a day of watching sports, or listening to music, it can all be done and so much more Downtown. We just can't get enough of Downtown Memphis.
Patrick
The lights, the blues, the way my four babies all under age six faces light up everytime we go. They just love it! We're from a SMALL town in Kosciusko, Mississippi. We have nothing, not even a Target. Our Walmart closes at 10 and we don't even have a mall. We have THREE clothing stores. And only five restraunts including fast food :( .... So whenever we come to Memphis every fourth of July weekend, it's like a breathe of fresh air! We finally feel like we can breathe, again. My husband and I havent spent a single Valentines day alone together since we got married five years ago. This would be a chance in a lifetime.
Adrienne
The atmoshere of Memphis, blues, barbeque and the sound of a southern twang greeting you on the streets of Memphis is what I love about downtown Memphis.
Kris
I love the horse and carriages the most. I think those are so romantic. I love going to a game at the fedex forum or the redbirds stadium. The food is unbelievable as well!
Brandi
The exciting atmosphere and the feeling that you belong no matter who you are or what you wear. Downtown is the heartbeat of Memphis.
Penny
I am new to Memphis and love the atmosphere of downtown! I love hearing music as you walk down the street to grab a coffee or on your way to a museum or on the way to an exciting game. No matter what time of the day, the downtown is always bustling with life and excitement.
Sarah
I just moved here 3 months ago, and I have fallen in love with Memphis. I love the live music, I love going to Grizzlies games, but most of all I love how the people here love their city!
April
I don't really know what I expected when I moved downtown, but it has exceeded my wildest expectations. Downtown encapsulates everything that is great about Memphis--the music, the food, the history, the architecture, and most of all, the people. Some of my best friends for life I have met since living downtown. Downtown is the best of Memphis, and it is everything I love about Memphis. I would never trade living in and hanging around downtown Memphis for anything.
Will
To be candid, I don't know what I love about Memphis. I have never been to Memphis. I've thought more and more recently that I'd like to go. It's been on my bucket list for some time now, but becoming more urgent of late.
A trip to your fair city is looming in my near future, fortunately, regardless of the outcome of this drawing.
Thank you for your support of Memphis.
Djiane
I love being able to look out my window at work and seeing the Mississippi River. I love being able to walk on the river bluff and watching the barges, riverboats and sunsets. I love going to lunch on the Mall, for dinner after work and the diversity of the nearby restaurants. I love watching new businesses move in. I love the music at Court Square, I love seeing tourist walk around trying to capture that special essence of Downtown Memphis. In a nutshell, in the words of The King, everything.
Jeanne
I love Downtown Memphis! It is a big city with a small town feel. Everyone is so friendly and respectful. I love that within walking distance you have Autozone Park, Beale Street, South Main Arts district and the Mississippi River.
Stacie
Downtown Memphis(DM): Why Exactly Do I Love Thee?
DM, I love thee because I can always count on you to entertain and wine/dine me no matter what. BB Kings, Silky O' Sullivan’s, The Republic, Club 152, or the Hollywood Disco can be my location of choice to get down on any weekend. And The Peabody, Silly Goose, Majestic Grille, Kooky Canuck, Hooters, and Blue City Café are the places that make my taste buds happy. Lastly, your combination of parks, civic offices, and year-long leisure activities would make any man smile. No matter what other women (Bartlett, Germantown, Southaven, etc.) may say, it is you DM that makes my world go round. That is why I have to say: DM, will you marry me? Just dance!
Brandon
I love the variety of downtown - an area I both live and work.
You've got the arts in South Main. You have good dining in the Main/Union/Beale/Monroe area. You have business (and a fairly respectable skyline) all around downtown. You have sports (the Forum, Redbirds stadium). You have modern living in the condos, lofts, and warehouse spaces. You have houses that make you feel like you're on vacation on Mud Island. You have the up-and-coming Uptown area. And that's not to mention the amazing medical research at St. Jude, thriving night life on Beale, learning opportunities at the Civil Rights Museum or Gibson Guitar factory, and theater at the Orpheum.
Downtown feels like everything at once, and has something for everyone. All in a package that can be traversed by trolley, driven, or walked. And all up against the backdrop of the mighty Mississippi River. What more could you ask for?
David
I love where Downtown Memphis is going! I work downtown, and have a perfect view of of the skyline. I face the river, but I am high enough and far enough to see everything from the old bridge and FedEx Forum on my left and the Pyramid on my right.
We have had some problems over the last few years, but we are overcoming these obstacles and rebuilding what has fallen each day. I love moving the right direction in ...higher!
Jay
As a person who has lived a their entire life right here in Memphis, Tennessee what I love about Downtown Memphis is the great people, great entertainment (Beale Street awesome local music scene) great food, rich in history and social services. When you are walking down the street or shopping you can look in the eyes someone passing by, smile and get nothing but a smile back. The older buildings have been restored, new architecture popping up. There is always some new coffee shop, art studio, or restaurant to enjoy. The expansion of theatre and art is just wonderful to see.
Standing on Riverside Drive and gazing into the Mississippi River, the bridge and the lovely homes and condos is breath taking.
I love Downtown Memphis!!!
JoAnn
Downtown is the highlight of Memphis!! I've lived in the South Main Arts District for over 6 years and it still surprises me... everyday there is something or someone new to see! There are tons of great restaurants, fabulous music, and very eclectic people to make any night out interesting. It seems the word is spreading too... the new Memphis Law School came; Memphis College of Arts is coming; along with many other venues and businesses that want to join in on the fun!
Keep it up downtown Memphis! You only keep getting better!
Melanie
Being downtown gives me the feel of what old Memphis must have been like. The store fronts, history, music, art...all of it is there. When I think of fun things to do, downtown always comes to mind first. Whether I am walking around Harbor Town, dining in fantastic restaurants, going to the Farmer's Market or walking around Beale Street, I am enjoying the sounds and sites of what makes Memphis Memphis!
Shali
Downtown Memphis is the very heart and soul of the city. Having lived in Harbor Town for the past 16 years, I can personally attest to its ability to transform a person. No other city has the combined history, stories, majestic river, music, good ole southern food and more.
It has been my privilege to have my 9 and 10 year old daughters revere the balcony where Martin Luther King's personal crusade ended, with the public one taking over. To see and talk about Jacqueline King's presence on the corner and how it is her American right to protest the museum is a memory of mine. We have toured the Burkle Estate and felt the presence of many who came before us seeking freedom and a better life.
I have taken them through Stax to experience music true Memphis style where color did not matter only the comradarie and the music that was being created. Elvis proves that anything is possible if only you follow your dream and dedicate yourself to it.
We have grabbed a burger at the bar at Earnestine and Hazel's, had sole food with Ms. B.J. at Alcenia's, sat watching the world go by at Flying Fish's counter and celebrated many a New Year's eve at the Majestic.
Our daughters learned to ride bikes on the large expanse along the Mississippi river. They have been lulled to sleep by the sound of a distant calliope and seen the river literally turn from murky brown to crystal blue in a day's time. The river has come calling as it rose and encouraged us to come to its bank as it left. The river and its nightly sunset show have become a part of us.
We love downtown. It is fun. It is colorful. It is history. It is Memphis.
Sally
What I love about Downtown Memphis is the view from Tom Lee Park looking up and down the river as the sunsets. This year will be my wife and I 5 year anniversary we had our wedding at The Church of the River then took the carriage ride down to the Memphis Queen were we had our reception on June 11, 2005 which brought about the most beautiful sunset and rainbow you could ever imagine. I just started working again after being laid off for 6 months. I would do anything to take the stress off her shoulders for a day or two being a MCS school teacher. DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS IS BEAUTY ON THE RIVER. This is why I love Downtown Memphis.
Chris
I love how you can get from one end of Downtown to the other in minutes! It's one big "little town!" It's great to be able to hit so many places on foot. You can have dinner, see a show at the Orpheum, have drinks on Beale after, etc. And if you don't feel like walking or driving, you can always take the trolley.
Cherry
I was probably 16, and went to #1 Beale Street to cheer on my cousin. I was as obnoxious then, and still can be, stealing all the ashtrays. My Mom, who grew up in d-town would always bring me here on school breaks. We would see the ducks, and it was so exciting to see the Stadium. People ask me why I moved to Memphis. It is because it is a WONDERFUL city, my grandparents would not have choosen this city to raise their girls if it wasn't such a special place. I had a calling to move here and can spend every day walking downtown sucking in my family's history and the love I feel from the pavement and the buildings comfort me.
Michael
I work downtown and I really would rather not work in any other area of Memphis. To me, downtown really has some of the best that Memphis has to offer.
Where else in Memphis can you satisfy nearly every craving you have? Want sushi? Downtown has it! Want the best fried chicken in the world? Downtown has it! Want a 5 star dining experience? Downtown has it! Or maybe you just want a soul burger. Well, downtown Memphis has that too!
Downtown Memphis captures the essence of the rich history of this city. From the historical buildings, to Beale Street and blues, to the Civil Rights Museum, to the breathtaking views of the Mississippi (I could keep listing all day), downtown is truly the heartbeat of this city.
I adore downtown Memphis and cannot wait to see how things unfold as the revitalization continues!
Rebecca
What I Love About Downtown Memphis. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. :)
There are so many things I love about downtown Memphis. I love how I can walk out my front door and meet up with friends at any minute. I love enjoying local restaurants. I love being able to walk home after a long night of partying. I love the live music up and down Beale Street.
I love how there is so much to do downtown. I can see plays, eat dinner, grab a few drinks, meet friends, play frisbee in the park, grill out on rooftops, play darts, play pool, take a walk, buy a big ass beer, dance the night away, bar-hop, ride a trolley, people watch on patios, go bowling, attend basketball games, attend concerts.
But most of all, I will say I love downtown because we are family. For a city as big as Memphis, I never thought I could feel a true sense of community. But I have found a group of people who have made such a huge impact on my life, I will never be the same again. Friends, sisters, trivia team members South Mainers, local restaurant owners, and everyone in between truly come together to create a sense of home in a place I never would have expected to find one.
Rebecca
Downtown always brings back good memories for me. My mother and I used to spend the day downtown a lot when I was a child. We would go to Mud Island, see an exhibit at Cook Convention Center, listen to live music, walk through A. Schwab, tour the homes in Victorian Village (my favorite!), and buy fresh popcorn at a local drugstore and feed the pigeons and squirrels in Court Square. Over the years I've been able to experience even more of downtown - like Beale Street, great restaurants, etc. I have so many great memories with family and friends here. Memphis will always be home in my heart no matter where I go.
Candy
I love downtown because I live across the river in Marion,AR and downtown provides a great escape. We love the downtown dinning of Flight, The Majestic, Spindini, Grille 83, and many more. Where else can you ride the trolley along the river front then hop off at your favorite eatery or art gallery. Not to mention the wonderful smell of the Rendezvous that fills every alley in the downtown area. I love the Peabody and its' grand lobby with the ducks and water fountain, and I treasure the wonderful atmosphere that encompasses the Corner Bar. Who can forget about the diverse mix of music that is found all around Beale and Main street. Whether you like jazz or blues, there is much to pleasure your ear. I love the River Park on Mud Island and watching our son wind his way down the lazy Mississippi River. The downtown fountains provide a great way to cool off and enjoy some family time in the summer. Just about anytime of year, you can go and have a blast downtown.
Amanda
The thing I love about Downtown Memphis is that it is a portrait of change. On a Friday afternoon, there's the constant drone of people bustling and cars heading to their respective destinations. Foot traffic on Main, while it won't remind you of Times Square, is heavy enough to remind you that the area is still relevant. Later that night, you will find thousands of basketball fans heading to the FedEx Forum, rallying behind their Tigers and Grizzlies. After the game, a trip to Beale is definitely in order. Grab a Big Ass Beer, maybe a tamale or two from Blues City Cafe, and watch the Beale Street Flippers amaze the crowds with unexpected acrobatic feats. After all that, Downtown on Sunday morning is tranquility personified. The streets are quiet, the stores are closed. Head to Tom Lee Park and watch the river roll by, or take a jog on the Riverwalk.
Robert
There are so many reasons to love Downtown Memphis. I would have to say that one of the reasons I am drawn to it so much is it's mystique and history. I was born and raised in Memphis, but the majority of my early life was spent in the suburbs, where one's perception of downtown becomes one of Beale Street and crime. It's a daily delight for me to see Downtown as it really is and to continually find something new about it that shatters the suburban preconceptions about this wonderful section of the city. From the Cotton Museum and it's incredibly rich display of our city's history to the amazing museum that is "Slave Haven" over in uptown, to the fog filled interior of Raiford's (Paula's that is), to the sumptuous smell of a Soul Burger wafting down South Main into the wee hours of the morning; Downtown has something to offer every person with a hint of curiosity and adventure. There is an energy and sense of community emerging downtown that goes far beyond that of what I grew up with. It's become a place that Memphians are proud of and with the addition of things like the U of M Law School and the Grizzlies recent improvements, the sense of pride and ownership that downtowners hold dear is spreading throughout the rest of the city. To sum it up, I guess what I love about downtown Memphis the most is the ability to show it off to any and everyone that I can. It's a great feeling to be able to shatter someones ill informed views on downtown and it feels just as great to show the city off to a tourist who might otherwise never have made it off of Beale.
Ryan
Because it's MEMPHIS!!! The history, the beauty, the many different facets of what make this a great City to live in!! And, lest we forget...the MUSIC!!!!
Kellie
I love the old buildings! ? to just walk down beale and come back up! The people are so down to earth happy people! You always find someone friendly and wants to talk about memphis!
shirley
The big city atmosphere in what is a quaint terrific city.
Jason
In addition to blues, booze and barbecue, there's grease, grit and Grizzlies.
Phil
Our family loves Dowtown Memphis. There is sooo much to do! We attend Redbirds games, go to concerts, and Beale Street is great. The live music on Beale is wonderful, not to mention all the great food to chose from. Yum! Regardless of if you want to have a day with the family or a night on the town, there are endless things to do in Downtown Memphis.

While I don't live downtown (hopefully looking soon), I do work close to downtown. The array of restaurants and theaters has makes downtown unique with amazing people. =)
Mary L
I lived downtown for years and loved being close to everything - work, restaurants, shopping, bars, etc. I still enjoy coming downtown for dinner, Grizzlies games, Redbirds games, and nights out with friends as much as possible. It's been great to see the downtown area grow over the years and become such a hotspot in Memphis.
Emily
I love the energy and the excitement of this city. The way you feel when people all around you are enjoying life with the music, the great food, and the camaraderie. A feeling of common appreciation for life downtown. I love the spirit that you can feel all around you of both the past and the present. It touches you in a special way that few other places ever will. You can literally feel the history of the music in the air.

Downtown is definitely the best area of Memphis for fun, food and getting out. And, its walkable. Just park the car, and walk or take the trolley. There's lots of variety too with live music, plays, great food, farmers market on Saturdays and of course the Grizzlies.
Chris
I love the art galleries and shops in the downtown area. I love it so much that I Live and work downtown. In the fall I love to walk downtown Memphis and admire the beautiful trees and the colors it bring. I love the fine dining and all of the things to do in Downtown Memphis. I look forward to receiving the downtowm Memphis email with all of the happenings. My husband and I plan our weekends from the list of events . I have lived in Memphis all of my life and moved downtown a couple of years ago ---I love it I love it !!!!!!!

The best thing about Downtown Memphis is its eclectivness (is that a word?)
The places that you can go to in Downtown Memphis are so varied. That's what make it so wonderful. One can seek fun, treasures to buy, businesses for a myriad of desires, art and architecture, historical places to visit and learn from, music and more music, entertainment, food, sports, and parks that are serene as well as where many events are held. The old and new are so beautifully mixed together it would be impossible to find someone who couldn't enjoy some aspect of this 'still more to come' area of Memphis.
Elizabeth
I love that everything downtown is within walking distance from where I live. And after living downtown for a few years, you run into people you know just about anywhere - it's such a small community.
Dirk
I love Downtown Memphis for its diversity in building design. Memphis is a very beautiful place offering flavorful foods, delightful music and sounds. It is a very historic place that visitors and residents alike can explore often. The historic parks and the fantastic view of the Mississippi River leaves one breathless. The entertainment section of Beale Street can take you back to many different eras in music as well as some of the places that most known musician got their start. Anyone visiting must take a horse and buggy ride and my favorite checking out the Peabody Ducks. You've gotta Love Memphis!!!!
BW
Everything, the Air, people, restaurants, scenary and music.
Mary
What I love about Downtown Memphis is that you can find almost anything you want, whether it be the eclectic scene or the yeppy scene. You can find different types of food, and something new is always popping up. Being a native Memphian and having an emotional attachment to the city, I am so happy that Memphis is moving into a more progressive direction and new ideas are being brought into the city!
Lisa
I think Downtown Memphis has a one of kind vibe that really draws people in. From Ernestine and Hazels on South Main, to the Orpheum, to the Redbirds, to Handy Park, to Beale Street, to the Peabody, to the carriage rides, to Metal Museum, to the Mississippi River, to Center for Southern Folklore...its unique, its yummy, its cool, its fun...its simply Memphis!
Emily
I Loooove Downtown Memphis because of the mix of people I see on a daily basis. The pedestrians on Main are such a treat for me to watch as I sit in the park. I love seeing the Horse Carriages with couples sitting and admiring each other and their surrounding. I love seeing the people sitting outside at their favorite restaurants enjoying meals with each other.
Taking the short drive to Riverside Drive and daydreaming on the River is one of my all time pleasure, the smell of Downtown Memphis, the evening events, the crowds on Beale ST., Game day excitement, and being right in the middle of everything Memphis; it's truly an experience you don't soon forget.
These things are all a part of what makes Downtown Memphis one of a kind.
Downtown is almost magical to observe if only we take the time to stop, look, & listen to what's going on around us.
I wouldn't trade it!!!
Go Memphis!!!
Nina
I love waking up early Saturday mornings during the summer and walking the farmer's market looking for the freshest local foods. I love seeing the downtown businesses decorate their storefronts and windows for the winter holidays. I love Friday night Grizzlies' games at the FedEx Forum and Sunday morning brunch at the Inn at Hunt Phelan. I love that the deli staff and butcher at Miss Cordelia's know their customers by name. I love cocktails on the rooftop of the Madison on Thursday nights followed by dinner at Felicia Suzanne's. I love seeing a Broadway show at the historic Orpheum Theater and a night out at Molly Fontaine's Lounge. I love that my husband works at Morgan Keegan, I work at BRIDGES and we took our wedding vows on the Peabody rooftop as the sun set over the mighty Mississippi! I am a true downtowner - and I love it!

Dowtown is where the cool people are. It is also the home of great food and great music. Downtown is absolutely the place to be!
Carole
The main thing that I love is that no matter where you are from or what your interests may be, Downtown Memphis always makes you feel like you're welcomed and it always feels like home!!
Stephanie
Downtown IS Memphis. Downtown combines all of the elements of Memphis in one location. There are so many varieties of entertainment and restaurants. It is hard to choose just one thing. You can choose between sports or art. It is all encompassed in a very and urban and walkable location. I am glad to see the way Downtown is finally coming back into its own.

Memphis: The Jewel of the Nile (MS River)
Downtown Memphis is an unforgettable experience. It is a symphony of cultures, expressed in its music, art, history and food. I am awed by the vision and economic potential that downtown Memphis offers but I am mostly awed by the shared pride of Memphians.
On my first visited Memphis in 1989. I had to see the world famous Beale Street in downtown Memphis. What I saw was like a movie set. The buildings for the most part, were facades that I am sure had deep stories to tell about a place that helped to define music history in this country. It was the stomping grounds for such music greats as W.. Handy, Rufus Thomas, BB King, and Albert king. Strangely enough, though I could not float in and out of stores on an endless shopping spree, I was struck by the feeling that someone had the vision to save the faces of these historic buildings. As I moved around downtown, what I saw was much the same story that most urban cities could tell at the time… urban blight. But still I could since that the powers that be were preservers of history. They knew that Memphis was like the jewel of the Nile (MS River). Though there were many empty buildings I could feel that the spirit of downtown Memphis was on its way back or maybe the spirit just never left.
When I moved here in 1995, I saw downtown Memphis blossom before my very eyes. Museums, tour agencies, restaurants, night clubs, art galleries, antique stores, festivals, retail shops, trolley cars and so much more had changed the story of downtown Memphis.
I remember thinking that I had moved here at another exciting period in Memphis
history. I am a Memphian now and it sure feels good.

I love being able to walk down the street and soak in the culture that no where else but downtown Memphis has to offer. From the smell of savory Memphis BBQ to the sounds of a strumming guitar, downtown Memphis has it all.
Terry
I love the historic architect and character of the buildings. Also, working downtown is great as you can walk to a variety of restaurants for lunch.
Carolyn
What's not to love? Great food, the Farmer's Market, people out and about, Autozone Park, and soon, better river access!
Bob
I love the beautiful sunsets over the mighty Mississippi and the lights of the city and Beale Street we enjoy from our corner condo at Waterford Plaza.
Sandra
Memphis is making a come back to a city that has excitement and great opportunities downtown. Beale Street, the Orpheum, the trolley tours, fine dining and events of all kinds. Taking a stroll around downtown is probably the only place in Memphis that you can do this and have plently of choices.
June
We've become regulars to downtown events since the Pyramid days with the Memphis Tigers.... and then the Grizzlies gave us even more occasions to venture downtown.... I love the vitality that we see on a regular basis.... it is wonderful to see families enjoying the Forum, Autozone Park, Mud Island, etc. The trolley tours each month are great fun and where else can you spend Sat morning trying new restaurants and then stocking up at the Farmers market? Let's keep supporting downtown and the wonderful hotels, restaurants and special events so readily available.
virginia
Revitalization within the historic. Leisurely Saturday mornings at the South Main Farmers Market. The Riverfront Tom Lee Park running loop. Happy Hours. Changing downtown perceptions in the minds of those "out East." Sipping cocktails on rooftops at sunset. The old "streetcars" turned "Trolley." Worldly and important contributions through St. Jude. BBQ smells. Elvis sitings. Local trivia nights. Memphis in May. Promoting the Blues. An afternoon of reflection at the Civil Rights Museum. The Grizzlies. Sweeping views of the 'M' Bridge and Mississippi River. Trolley Tour nights. Something for everyone...
Bridget
I love the food downtown! Great BBQ, Italian, Sushi, Chinese, you name it!
Colin
I love all the entertainment that goes on downtown. Between Beale Street, the Orpheum, and the FedEx Forum there is always plenty to see!
Whitney
I LOVE that Downtown Memphis is such a close community. It doesn't matter where you go, you'll run into a friend. I also like all the small businesses downtown. It's nice to feel like you're giving back to your own community.
Angela
I absolutely love living in Downtown Memphis. From the many historical landmarks to our fine dining choices to the picturesque places to walk, run or simply sit. Downtown Memphis is a place where Memphians and tourists alike can go and experience a diverse mix of sports, art, music, and dining.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Well, what's not to love?? My wife and I moved downtown temporarily in June 2008 due to a fire at our home. We lived on S. Front Street directly across from Amtrak and the Farmers Market. WHAT A GREAT LOCATION AND AWESOME TIME!!! We were really feeling down about being displaced from our home, but moving downtown, even temporarily, was the best decision we could have made! Downtown living turned a bad situation into a great experience! We participated in the trolley night every month, went to the farmers' market every Saturday, enjoyed being able to walk or ride the trolley to entertainment, and made some great new friends! Well, our home was completed in December 2008 but WE MISS LIVING DOWNTOWN!! We loved living downtown so much, that we are now considering selling our home and looking for a new home DOWNTOWN! There is always something to do... and it is just beyond your steps if you live downtown! Whether you are single, married, or empty nesters, downtown Memphis is where you will find that energy and charm that gives you a sense of peace. DOWNTOWN MEMPHIS - WE LOVE IT!
Jason
I love the sense of a close knit community. I love the interaction people have with each other. Even though strangers pass and greet each other, you can still feel a common vibe amongst those individuals and that common vibe is the enjoyment of the downtown atmosphere. And I also love the hustle and bustle of people walking around catching a ride on the horse carriage or in a taxicab, the different smells from different restaurants as well as the building structures. There is alot to love about our downtown Memphis.
Kimberly
What I love most about Downtown Memphis is the "small town feel with big city appeal." Downtown Memphis has so much to offer in terms of "big city appeal" with numerous restaurants, retail shops, hotels, theater, art galleries, sporting events, and more. However, as a Downtown resident, you still get that "small town feel" with a tight-knit community of locals.
Dave
I love the little intricate eateries, gift shops and antique galleries in the downtown area. When my relatives visit, those are the places that they enjoy most. Out of the 45 years being here in Memphis,I did not know that Downtown Memphis offered so many beautiful condos, apartment living, etc. Since I now work downtown, I love venturing out on my lunch breaks to see what else can I introduce my family to when it comes to Downtown Memphis.
Francis
I love going for Saturday runs from my house on the Island down mainstreet and back on the bluff walk.
Chris
The energy of the nightlife. The cleanliness of the area, along with the numerous choices for eateries & things to do. You never run out of things to do downtown!
Celeste
Close proximity to everything thats important to me. Favorite dining place, rendezvous. Favorite drug store, walgreens.
My barber. Favorite mode of transportation, the trolley that takes me everywhere I need to go downtown. All this plus the beautiful Mississippi and the lights on the bridge at night.
Linda
I love the feeling of walking the streets close to Riverside Drive, closing my eyes and inhaling all the goodness from the Ms. River
MICHIJI (MITCH)
I love the people (visitors and locals both)! I love the variety of restaurants and places to sit down and have a drink with friends. No matter what you are in the mood for, there is something for you downtown!
Stephanie
I love that I can go out with friends, meet new friends and have an incredibly fun time without ever worrying about driving anywhere as I live downtown and wouldn't ever want to live anywhere else.
Brian
I LOVE all the different restaurants downtown. Along with the great view of the Mississippi.
Jason
Downtown is the center of the city! Full of action and excitement. A great place to live. Plus - the BEST sunsets in the region!
Randy
I can (and do) live, work, play and shop all within a 5 minuet drive or walk or ride my bike.
James
I love the view of the river from the Bluffwalk. It's really our local national park, and should be a national historic trail. A friend calls it a walk through time, especially if the Bluffwalk is extended. Audubon landed somewhere to the south of the current Bluffwalk, and of course DeSoto. Then the large fort, only part of which has ever been excavated--and was over a mile long. It is really from two time periods. Then the Cobblestone Landing; another archeological site covering many artifacts.
Best of all is the natural view, however. We're the only real city I can think of unobscured by industry on the other side of the river. What sunsets!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sue
I love the feel of downtown. There are delicious restaurants, places to hear great music, parks, museums, shopping, and activities. My husband and I have really enjoyed going to Redbirds games and the Friday night Trolley Tours.
Sarah
EVERYTHING!!!!
Orpheum, Beale Street, The trolley, The RIVER.
Christine
Downtown Memphis is alive. . .the stores, the restaurants, the music, the people. It is a culmination of all that is right with Memphis. It represents her infamous past, her delightfully entertaining present and her exuberant future.
Joy
I love the historic architecture. Without all of our beautiful old buildings downtown, we'd be just like any other city.
Charles
I love the sense of community that is Downtown. All "downtowners" seem to know each other and like to hang out with one another. If I walk into pretty much any local hangout Downtown, like Calhoun's, Flying Saucer, Bardog, Majestic Grille, or Bluff City Coffee (to name my favorites), I will know someone there!
