Feed Your Heart and Soul: It’s Time for Inspiring Preachers and Fish Pudding!
Calvary Episcopal Church has announced the lineup for the 95th Lenten Preaching Series and Waffle Shop, offered Tuesdays through Fridays from Thursday, Feb. 15 through Friday, March 23.
Calvary’s famous Waffle Shop will be open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., serving up all traditional favorites, including homemade waffles, salads, and daily specials. All proceeds from the Waffle Shop support outreach ministries across the city of Memphis.
This year’s Preaching Series features national and local spiritual leaders from a variety of backgrounds and religions including the Rev. J. Lawrence Turner, the Rev. Gregory Boyle, and the Rev. Naomi Tutu, among others. The series begins each Tuesday through Friday at 12:05 p.m. and ends by 12:40 p.m.
Calvary offers Lent After Dark for those who may not be able to make it during lunch or who want to bring their families for an evening meal and hear a speaker. Lent After Dark takes place every Wednesday during Lent with a soup and salad dinner available from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. and a speaker beginning at 6:30 in the Great Hall. Time with the speaker on Wednesday evenings is longer than during the noontime Series and takes place in a more relaxed, conversational setting.
The cost for dinner is $6/person and $20/family max and includes soup, salad, bread, and drinks. A vegetarian soup is offered each week. All proceeds go to Hunger Ministries at Calvary.
“For nearly a century, the people of Calvary Church have taken on a curious Lenten practice. We cook waffles and much more for all of downtown Memphis enjoy, and we invite wise and inspiring preachers into our pulpit from places near and far (geographically, philosophically, and even temperamentally, I'm told).” said the Rev. Scott Walters, rector of Calvary Episcopal Church. “The combination is rich in every way. But the real reward for the many hours of peeling shrimp for mousses and chopping parsley for fish puddings (actual Waffle Shop delicacies) is the way Calvary's doors open wide and Memphis streams in. Whoever you are, I do hope that stream includes you.”
