WEVL's Blues on the Bluff® Turns 30 on Saturday, July 21
It’s back and better than ever--join WEVL FM 89.9 friends and listeners on the grounds of The Metal Museum for the 30th annual Blues on the Bluff concert this Saturday, July 21.
Relax on the bluff of the Mississippi River while enjoying the talents of Lightnin' Malcolm, The Kenny Brown Band, and Marcella & Her Lovers.
The sponsor this year is Memphis Made Brewing, and they're creating a specialBlues on the Bluff craft beer just for the event.
North Mississippi Hill Country blues musician Lightnin' Malcolm gets the party started. This bluesman has come to exemplify the modern day Deep Blues Guitar groove and will showcase songs from his most recent album, Outlaw Justice.
Mississippi blues icon Kenny Brown returns to Blues on the Bluff in a rare appearance with his full band. An accomplished and versatile guitarist, he has been immersed in the blues since childhood and was the right hand man to the legendary R.L. Burnside for over 20 years. Creator of the famed Mississippi Hill Country Picnic--on hiatus this year--Brown played at the very first Blues on the Bluff in July 1989. We are thrilled to have The Kenny Brown Band back for the 30th anniversary celebration.
Marcella & Her Lovers close out the evening. Fusing elements of her Creole heritage with the angelic grind of Memphis soul, Marcella Simien has been lauded by renowned Memphis music producer Boo Mitchell as “one of the most soulful artists I’ve heard since the glory days of Memphis soul music. Her sound and stage presence is a constant reminder that soul music is still alive and well.”
An assortment of Memphis Made craft beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages will be sold, along with BBQ and more from the Central BBQ Food Truck and MemPops.
WEVL’s Silent Auction will be ongoing throughout the evening, with art, merchandise and gift certificates from Memphis restaurants, shops, venues, and more. Guests will also have an opportunity to purchase Blues on the Bluff posters, WEVL T-shirts and more.
Guests may bring chairs and blankets, but are asked to leave pets and outside food and drinks at home. The gate opens at 6:00 p.m., show time is 6:30, and the party doesn’t end until 11:00. The $25 admission price ($12 for kids 11 and under) entitles guests to free guarded parking and benefits WEVL FM 89.9. Discounted advance tickets can be purchased online at www.wevl.org .
To get there, take I-55 North or Crump Blvd. to Metal Museum Drive, Exit #12C (the last exit just before the "old" bridge), then follow the signs to Blues on the Bluff.
